KenKen is a similar puzzle to Sudoku that is featured in the daily New York Times. Currently there isn't a KenKen game available on the DS in English, but this guide in its current form should be sufficient for anyone to be able to navigate the menus to simply play KenKen puzzles. This guide was not intended to offer an exact translation of menus, nor was it designed to teach you how to play KenKen. This guide assumes you already know the rules of KenKen. You do not need to know any Japanese beforehand. If you don't know the rules for KenKen, these sites will help: http://www.nytimes.com/ref/crosswords/kenken.html http://www.kenken.com/ ------------------------- A Note About This Document: ------------------------- This document is encoded in Shift-JIS format for the Japanese text. Some readers may find that the ASCII art at the beginning is garbled, or will see garbled text in parenthesis scattered throughout the document. If it can be helped, you should read this document with a monospaced font and in Shift-JIS encoding. If you don't know what any of that means, don't worry, as I will do my best to describe the buttons shown without being able to see the Japanese. Otherwise, consult Google for instructions on viewing Japanese fonts on your operating system. ------------------------- How to Start Playing: ------------------------- After powering on your DS, you will see the Gakken logo. Tap the screen to skip the logo and you will see Tetsuya Miyamoto, the creator of KenKen, walk up to greet you. Tap again to begin. You will have a choice between different users/accounts, which will likely be empty at first. Options numbered 1-4 will be save game slots for the different users, the final option "Tameshitemiyou" (ためしてみよう) is the guest account if you do not wish to save your progress. Double click on any account and you will be brought up to the naming screen. ------------------------- Naming your account: ------------------------- You can only type in Hiragana here. Unfortunately for those who might want to write in Katakana (the alphabet that mainly deals with foreign words), you will have to use a pseudonym or just make up nonsense. Draw within the four-grid area anything you wish and it will pop up at the top of the screen. The options to the right of the grid (from top to bottom) are Accept, Backspace, and Go Back. The Go Back (もどる) button is the one with the red arrow pointing left. ------------------------- Initial Usage of Account or Usage of Guest Account: ------------------------- You will be greeted with an introduction to the game: "Good evening, I am Miyamoto". The first option you see "susumu" (すすむ) is to continue, click on this button four times (on the bottom left). This button always has a blue arrow pointing to the right. The next set of options are Yes and No. Yes (はい) always has a blue arrow over the button pointing right, No (いいえ) always has a red arrow below it pointing left. If you click No (which I recommend that you do), you will skip the lecture on the rules of KenKen. If you did say yes, the options are from left to right: Continue, Back, End. If you click Back on the first screen, it ends the lecture for some reason. _______________________________________________________________________ ------------------------- Menu Overview: ------------------------- Below is a tree of all menus in the game. Today's Puzzle (Person/Chalkboard) II. KenKen University (Pencil/Paper) II. Scuba Adventure (Box/Treasure) IV. Multiplayer (DS/WiFi) V. KenKen Rules (Paper Scroll) To the right of buttons I-V: VI. Option (DS with Speech Bubble) VII. Go Back (Takes you back to name/account selection) Most choices need to be double clicked. Single clicks will give a description. ------------------------- I. Today's Puzzle: ------------------------- If you click on Today's Puzzle, you will be given a daily puzzle. Afterwards it marks on the calendar your attendance to this "lesson". See the section "Playing Puzzles" on more information about actually playing the core game. You can only do one of these puzzles per day. See the section "Playing Puzzles" before attempting to use this option. ------------------------- II. KenKen University: ------------------------- 1. Quizes 2. Tests/Certification 3. Calendar 4. University Levels ------------------------- 1. Quizes ------------------------- a. Addition Puzzle b. Addition and Subtraction Puzzle c. Multiplication Puzzle d. Multiplication and Division Puzzle e. Hidden Type Puzzle This section is the core of the game, the KenKen puzzles. Playing puzzles in each section will consist of quizes, then a test. The quiz puzzles are generally easier than the test. But, if you pass the test you earn a higher ranking. Beside each section will be your current ranking in that "class". The lower the number, the better. I'm not sure what happens when you reach the higher levels. If it's anything like Japanese Chess rankings, it might start counting up again for mastery status. The Hidden Type puzzle will only display a number, you will have to decide what math is needed to get that number. The type of math can be different for every number in the puzzle. ------------------------- 2. Tests/Certification ------------------------- When playing the "quizes" in the above section, you are given a final test before you are awarded a higher ranking. If you fail one of these tests, you will be taken back to the KenKen University menu. If you have a pending test that you failed, you can re-take it here without going through the quizes beforehand. ------------------------- 3. Calendar ------------------------- Simply displays the Daily Puzzle attendance. ------------------------- 4. University Levels ------------------------- This displays how far you've progressed for each type of KenKen puzzle. If you click on one of the numbers for a section, you will be shown your best time. The bottom right cyan button labled "Modoru" (もどる) will take you back to the previous screen. ------------------------- III. Scuba Adventure: ------------------------- It is not necessary to use this function to play the KenKen puzzles, but this will be addressed in a future update. ------------------------- IV. Multiplayer: ------------------------- I will try to document this section in a future update. ------------------------- V. KenKen Rules: ------------------------- This repeats the rules that appeared when you first signed up for an account. ------------------------- VI. Option Menu: ------------------------- 1. Look at Items (Sunglasses) 2. System (Wrench) 3. Erase Data (Eraser) 4. Tips (Miyamoto) ------------------------- 1. Look at Items: ------------------------- These are the items you've purchased in the Scuba shop. I do not have a translation of this section yet. ------------------------- 2. System: ------------------------- a. Animation b. ????????? c. ????????? d. ????????? e. ????????? I do not have a translation of this section yet. However, the blue toggled options are "on" while the red are "off". I recommend turning off Animation, as it doesn't add much to the game. ------------------------- 3. Erase Data: ------------------------- This option is for erasing your profile. Simply pressing the left button 3 times will erase your profile. The left button will always be a blue arrow pointing right. It's literally Yes (はい), Yes (はい), Continue(すすむ). The game asks you: "Do you want to erase your game?" "Are you sure?" "Data deleted." However, if you find yourself in this section accidentally you will want to select No (いいえ). ------------------------- 3. Tips: ------------------------- Miyamoto will give you tips on playing KenKen, but in Japanese :) _______________________________________________________________________ ------------------------- Playing Puzzles: ------------------------- Once you have started a game, you will see the familiar KenKen puzzle. The top left field will be pre-selected. You can either select a number now, or select another square. If you wish to change numbers, first observe the right hand side where you will see the numbers available (this depends on how large the puzzle is). Your first puzzle will probably only have numbers 1-3. Select the number that you think is right. You can change numbers as many times as you want while a square is selected. Below the numbers is the red button "Kesu" (けす) which will erase the selected square's number. To the right of it is a black rectangle. Pressing this will change the color of the numbers you lay down on the board. This might be useful in more complicated puzzles for labeling potential answers or problem areas. You can also make notes all over the puzzle by selecting the button with the pencil writing. This brings up a menu with buttons (from top to bottom): Back, Draw, Erase, Clear. The bottom right has an icon of a door. If you bring this menu up, you will be given three options (from top to bottom): Clear, Save, and Cancel. Pressing the top button (Clear) will delete all of the filled in numbers you have made. This is useful if you want to start from scratch. If you click Save, you will be asked if you truly want to save. The blue option on the left is Yes (はい), the red option on the right is No (いいえ). If you say yes, you will be brought back to the main menu. If you have a saved game in your account, you will be asked if you wish to continue. If you say Yes (Left blue option/はい) it will bring you directly back to the puzzle. To delete the puzzle you will need to say No (Right red option/いいえ), Continue (すすむ), then Yes (Left blue option/はい). ------------------------- Once you have completed your puzzle: ------------------------- In the top right corner is an icon with an O and X. This is the "check" button, in which Miyamoto will let you know if your solution is correct or not. If you are correct you will have a large "O" (which is culturually equivalent to a checkmark), if you are incorrect you will get a large "X". If you are incorrect, sometimes you are given a chance to continue the puzzle. After completing the puzzle you will just need to press the "Susumu" (すすむ) or Continue button until you are brought to the main screen (about six times). During this your time will be added up. If you make the best time on a puzzle, he will commend you. The points you earn will work towards items in the Scuba Adventure shop. If you see a Yes or No question box, it's asking if you want to continue. "Continue?" (つづけますか?) will be mentioned on the top screen. On the left will be Yes (はい) and on the right will be No (いいえ) If you say no, you will not given the opportunity to continue or take the test if you qualified. If you pass your test, Miyamoto presents you with a certificate. This will bring up your ranking and you will be given more difficult puzzles in the category you played. _______________________________________________________________________ This FAQ is under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (United States) This license is acceptable for Free Cultural Works.
