Dragon Quest VI: Realms of revelation features a system whereby some monsters in the game can be recruited to join your party. For those who are familiar with the Super famicom version of this game, you will notice that the recruitment system has been completely overhauled in this version. It is also completely disimilar from the way recruitment worked in Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. This guide is intended to help you understand which monsters can be recruited and what steps need to be taken in order to faciliate their recruitment. You will also learn some useful information about the traits of each monster (i.e. the spells, abilities, equipment, resistences etc.). You may even find some tips that will help you recruit these monsters earlier. This guide contains some minor spoilers about plot events that must happen before each monster can be recruited. If you do not want to risk reading these spoilers then you should stop here. =============================================================================== *02 RECRUITMENT RULES / FAQ .::cMM@@M@M@MMM@:, o6MM@Wnciiic7noIA#MM0b; Y@M#n,,. .,.,ivvX722$MMB. ,#Mb7c........,,.v;i;t7oSU6#MA 9M0ti..;v;,i:i,:,;;vct7XnI1ot9@Mc MME7,. .;XcYvYvc;c77XSC1tzz8E0bUEM$, .Q@oviii;ivvv;c;CXCConStXXU90Z0WBQWEMM :MQt;vvCo2SXvYC11o1SttXX71nEbbbWQW0QW@@ .E#S711StntntStntnttCtX7Czz8bQ0W0Q0QB##M2 2MI71C1XtX17t7t7C7C7tXtnAS2E08QQWE$$$W#BMY .0@XYctC1oZ6I1StStSCzI62AzIA0ZbZ00QB#W#W#$Mo $M1Xcv71SbAb80b9U9A62AzAAQB#00900W0QW#W$BWM1 $MI1Cc71C1zS..,tE8IIzA29b7,:;QW0EBQWE00QWBB#M8 SMb7Yc,;CItv.c7X::1AozSAz:,XYi.nEE800W0QE00#$M@c iM0Yivv;;tn1. For those familiar with how monster recruitment worked in Dragon Quest 5, you must forget everything you know. This doesn't work the same way at all. If you are familiar with how monster recruitment worked in the Super Famicom version of Dragon Quest 6, I'm afraid it doesn't work like that either. So how does it work? It's actually quite simple. As you progress the story, you will encounter monsters outside of battle. Some of these monsters will just join you as soon as you talk to them. For other monsters, you have to earn it a bit by satisying a set of requirements first. Once you have satisfied the prerequisite tasks, the monsters will join you when you ask them to. It's that simple! No expensive sirloins or low probability rates to worry about here! Just do some stuff and then talk to the monsters you want. For more details on the specific requirements for each monster, please see the RECRUITABLE MONSTER LIST / DETAILS section. 2) WHEN CAN I START TO RECRUIT MONSTERS? You will encounter the first monster you can recruit in Howcastle. Prior to that, you will have to make do with regular old human characters. Oh come on, they're not that bad! 3) IS IT TRUE THAT ONLY SLIMES CAN BE RECRUITED? No, there is one exception. You can also recruit a dragon. It's a Hacksaurus that goes by the name Lizzie. Other than that, only slimes are available. 4) IS MONSTER RECRUITMENT NECESSARY IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS GAME? No. You can make it through this game and defeat the final boss without recruiting a single monster. There are side-quests however, that do require monster recruitment. These include The Best-Dressed Contest and the arena at Slimopolis. If you want to fully complete everything in this game, you will need to make some monster friends. Don't worry, they won't bite. 5) WHAT IS THE MONSTER MASTER CLASS USED FOR? The Monster Master class is not affiliated with monster recruitment in this game. It is simply a beginner level class that is a pre-requisite for the intermediate Ranger class. This is different from the Super Famicom version of the game where the Monster Master class was used for monster recruitment. 6) DO I NEED TO USE "TAG MODE" TO OBTAIN ANY OF THE MONSTERS? No. Although it is not a requirement, Tag Mode can get you access to the Cureslime, Shell Slime and Liquid Metal Slime monsters prior to completing the game. If you have 10 Dreamcards via Tag Mode, then you can access the Cureslime and Shell Slime monsters. If you have 20 Dreamcards, you can access the Liquid Metal Slime monster. Note that these three monsters can still be obtained without Tag Mode, but you have to wait longer in that case. 7) CAN I STILL RECRUIT MONSTERS WHEN MY WAGON IS FULL? Yes you can. They will run off to see Patty the Party Planner if the wagon is full. 8) WHERE CAN I DROP OFF / PICK UP MONSTERS THAT DON'T FIT IN MY WAGON? Once you have the wagon you can bring a total of 8 people along on your adventure (including the hero). If you are running out of room in your wagon, you must drop off extra party members at Patty's Party Planning Place. You can find these in numerous locations around the world, beginning with Port Haven. Note that Patty can accommodate both humans and monsters. She doesn't discriminate like she did in Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. 9) DO MONSTERS STILL GAIN EXPERIENCE WHEN I LEAVE THEM WITH PATTY? No, they do not. As such, any party members left with Patty will begin to fall behind the others in terms of character levels and class levels. Choose who to bring with you wisely. 10) WHICH MONSTERS ARE THE BEST TO RECRUIT? Each monster has it's own set of unique traits that may make it an asset when combined with your other party members in combat. While some monsters seem to have advantages over others, most of the better monsters are obtained later in the game and will require extra leveling to bring them up to speed. For specific details on why some monsters may be better than others, consult the RECRUITABLE MONSTER LIST / DETAILS section. Also, I have done a bit of a more direct comparison in the MONSTER RANKINGS section. 11) I DON'T LIKE MY MONSTER'S NAME! CAN I CHANGE IT? Yes, you can. In fact, you can change the name of any party member once you have obtained the Mermaid Harp. The servant of the God of Names can be found under the sea just outside the village of Ghent. 12) HOW MANY MONSTERS CAN I TAKE WITH ME WHILE ADVENTURING? Once you have the wagon, you can have 8 party members at any time. Additional party members must be dropped off at Patty's Party Planning Place. You can't drop off the Hero or Ashlynn though, so that means you can have 6 monsters with you at most. There's nothing to stop you from leaving the Hero and Ashlynn in the wagon though, so feel free to toss them aside and travel around with a pack of monsters if that's what you want to do. =============================================================================== *03 RECRUITABLE MONSTER LIST / DETAILS t@nW0 nM@@ti bM0@@Y Y@@MMM2;. After the comparisons, a qualitative statement will be made about which monsters are the "best" in this author's opinion ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stat Rankings: HP: 1) Lv 99 Hacksaurus --> 950 2) Lv 99 King Slime --> 850 3) Lv 99 Mottle Slime --> 770 Comments: The Hacksaurus is clearly dominant in this category with a max HP stat that is 100 points higher than the next closest monster. MP: 1) Lv 99 King Slime --> 900 2) Lv 99 Healslime --> 800 3) Lv 99 Cureslime --> 680 Comments: King Slime takes the top rank here, but it's definitely worth noting that Healslime and Cureslime have very respectable MP stats and are the only two party members in the game that learn Omniheal. This often makes them an asset when facing late game bosses. Strength: 1) Lv 99 Hacksaurus --> STR = 410 2) Lv 99 King Slime --> STR = 360 3) Lv 99 MottleSslime --> STR = 340 Comments: Hacksaurus is a clear winner here with 50 more strength points than the next closest monster. Although Mottle Slime takes third place, a regular slime comes close with a maximum strength of 330 at Lv 99. Agility: 1) Lv 16 Liquid Metal Slime --> AGL = 500 2) Lv 99 Slime --> AGL = 300 3) Lv 99 Cureslime --> AGL = 300 Comments: The Liquid Metal slime get moderate agility growth as it approaches
level 12. Once you get past that threshold, the agility skyrockets
with each level up. Slime and Cureslime tie for second place and
the next closest monster (Slime Knight) only has 250 max agility.
Resilience:
1) Lv 1 Liquid Metal Slime --> RES = 500
2) Lv 99 Shell Slime --> RES = 350
3) Lv 99 Hacksaurus --> RES = 250
Comments: Liquid Metal Slime has the best resilience right from level 1. This
stat does not increase beyond 500, even when the LMS is increased to
the max level of 16.
The Shell Slime has remarkably good resilience, even at lower levels.
A level 40 Shell Slime has more resilience than a level 99
Hacksaurus. Not too shabby.
Wisdom:
1) Lv 99 Hacksaurus --> 300
2) Lv 99 King Slime --> 300
3) Lv 99 Slime Knight --> 240
Comments: Hacksaurus and King Slime have a higher wisdom stat at level 63 than
the next leading competitor (Slime Knight) at level 99.
Style:
1) Lv 60 Slime --> 130
2) Lv 99 Hacksaurus --> 100
3) Lv 16 Liquid Metal Slime --> 090
Comments: The simple slime is clearly the monster with the greatest inner
beauty. This can be useful when competing in the fashion show. This
adorable little creature reaches its ultimate style stat at only
level 60.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Resistance Rankings:
1) Liquid Metal Slime
- fully resistant to all spells and breath attacks
2) King Slime
- Good resistance to most spells and breath attacks
- Not resistant to Woosh and Zap spells
3) Hacksaurus
- Good overall resistance
- Fully resistant to Woosh spells
- Not resistant to Crack and Zap spells or blizzard breath attacks
Comments: Slime Knight came very close to Hacksaurus, but was slightly less
resistant overall. The biggest weakness of Slime Knight is the lack
of resistance to any breath attacks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leveling Rate Rankings:
1) Mottle Slime
2) Slime
3) Hacksaurus
Comments: Each monster's growth rate typically changes during the course of
leveling. Some monsters level quicker at low levels and then slow
down as you get higher. Other monsters start slow and then
accelerate at the higher levels.
The Mottle Slime, Slime and Slimeknight are among the fastest
monsters to level up at the earlier levels (1 - 50) and also reach
level 99 with the lowest amount of experience required. Despite this
fact, the Hacksaurus edges out the Slime Knight for third place due
to its rapid leveling rate at higher levels (50+).
It's worth mentioning that the Liquid Metal Slime reaches its max
level with less experience required than any other monster. In spite
of that, it still levels slowly overall, since it spreads out all the
experience over 16 levels.
It's also useful to know that, although the Hacksaurus levels slowly
at first, her leveling rate is actually far superior to the Slime
Knight from level 50 right up until level 97. Above level 97, the
Slime Knight's leveling curve finally comes back down below the
Hacksaurus'.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Skill Set Ranking:
1) Healslime
2) Cureslime
3) Liquid Metal Slime
Comments: Due to the class system in this game, all characters have access to
nearly all of the skills and spells. Despite this fact, one skill is
exclusive to monster characters: Omniheal.
The only characters who can learn Omniheal in this game are the
Healslime and the Cureslime. In this case, the Healslime was ranked
higher since it learns Omniheal at level 23 (whereas Cureslime learns
it at level 50). Also, the Healslime is available earlier in the
game.
The Liquid Metal Slime is listed because it has access to some of the
rarer skills in the game. Namely, Magic Burst and Big Bang.
Although Ashlynn learns Magic Burst through the course of the game,
the only way others can access these skills is by advancing in the
Liquid Metal Slime class. Since this class is very rare, it is handy
that the Liquid Metal Slime is able to learn them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aquisition Difficulty Rankings:
1) Slime Knight
2) Healslime
3) Mottle Slime
Comments: The Slime Knight, Healslime and Mottle Slime monsters have the fewest
requirements out of all the monsters and are the first that you are
able to acquire. If you simply play the game and keep an eye out for
this trio, you will be able to acquire them as soon as it is possible
to do so.
If you have the ability to connect with 10 or 20 other players via
local wireless in "Tag Mode", you could potentially get the Cureslime
Shell Slime and Liquid Metal Slime monsters as soon as you get the
flying bed. In that case, you would have them earlier than the
Mottle Slime, but it is arguably quite difficult for most people to
get enough Dreamcards to enable this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Monster Rankings:
I want to reiterate that the overall rankings provided next are the subjective
opinions of this author. You should find the best monsters that suit your
party and your playing style by using the information provided in the preceding
sections of this guide.
1) Slime Knight
2) Healslime
3) Hacksaurus
4) King Slime
Comments: The Slime Knight is your perfect "all-rounder". Although it
consistently falls short of the top 3 in most of the above rankings,
it is usually not far out. The biggest advantage of the Slime Knight
is how early you get it in the game. There is much more opportunity
to advance the Slime Knight in levels and classes by the time you
have the chance to use some of the other monsters you will acquire.
Healslime is acquired early on and learns Omniheal at a low level.
This can be a good monster to have in your second line since you can
toss it in to cast Omniheal and then switch it back out. It also has
an average leveling rate and good resistances.
The Hacksaurus is just a beast in terms of stats and resistances.
She's easy to obtain, but you don't get her until later in the game.
Hacksaurus is well suited to late-game and post-game play, but she
will require some investment to bring her up to speed with the rest
of your team.
King Slime has some of the best stats and good resistances across the
board. You pay for this with one of the slowest leveling rates
though. Depending on how much emphasis you want to put on fashion,
it can be a bit difficult to obtain since you need to win rank 7 of
The Best-Dresser Contest.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation features a rich cast of human characters
that will accompany you on your quest. By the end of the game, if you keep all
of the human party members with you, there will only be room for one monster.
As much as I love the recruitable monsters, the party chat feature is most
interesting with the human party members. Additionally many of the monsters who
can join your party, do so fairly late in the game. This can make it a chore
to level them up and train them in useful classes.
During my playthrough, I kept a full party of human characters and added the
Slime Knight for the final spot. Since the Slime Knight is the first monster
you can recruit, he gains the significant advantage of time which is used to
increase character levels and class levels. He is also well suited to compete
in the Slimopolis Arena and to participate in the one round of The Best-Dresser
Contest that requires monster contestants.
I suggest placing a lower emphasis on training monsters in this game than you
might have had in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. It's certainly
fun to try to collect them all, but it will really slow you down if you want to
train them all too. It can be a fun way to mix things up in the post-game
though!
