Introduction [int00] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to my FAQ for Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing. In this guide you will find all the information you could possibly hope to stumble on regarding this little gem of a racing title. The Nintendo DS version of Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing was released in March of 2007, and was met with poor reception, much like all other versions of the game. It has very little to do with the blockbuster movie franchise of the same name, and there is no story present in the game. So it assumed that you know who all of the characters are as well as the tracks, and everything else. I wrote this FAQ because at the time of this writing there were no other FAQs for the DS version of Shrek Smash n' Crash racing. I found it to be a fun little title, and when I saw that no one had written anything for it, I thought I would try my hand at it. It not only helps you, the reader who is seeking help, but also GameFAQs - and the "impossible dream" of having a complete guide for every game in the database. Cheers. Now with that being said, it is on to the FAQ itself! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Controls [con01] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a basic listing of what the controls do in Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing. There is no method of changing the control scheme in the game, so all listings are for the default (and only) control setup. Start button = Pause/in-game menu Select button = No use Control pad = Steer your character and mount A button = Accelerate B button = Brake/Reverse Y button = View reverse camera angle L button = Use Power-Up R button = Jump ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. Power-Ups [pou02] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Power-Ups are weapons and magic gained by smashing through barrels on the track during a race. When you get a Power-Up an icon appears in the upper left corner of the top screen. Use it to your liking. Below is a listing of every Power-Up and a description for each Power-Up. Item: Jack-o-Lantern Effect: This pumpkin may look harmless, but lay it on the track in your opponent's way and it will splatter everywhere when hit, causing them to spin out. Item: Giant Beanstalk Effect: When the magic seed is planted, a giant beanstalk grows instantly from the ground causing an impeding barrier for your opponents. Item: Lord Farquaad-in-a-Box Effect: Drop this toy on the track and the head bobbles around, hitting your fellow racers. Item: Goose Effect: Pick up the Goose and let it fly erratically down the track, disrupting players in its path. Item: Frog Balloon Effect: The frog balloon will buzz around and seek out anybody within range to attack, almost like a homing projectile. Item: Garden Gnome Effect: Throw this lawn ornament straight ahead to trip up other players and cause them to spin out. Item: Magic Frost Effect: This magic spell freezes all opponents. They will be unable to steer until it melts or smashes as they run smack into a wall. Item: Pixie Dust Effect: When used, this magic dust gives the player multiple boosts of speed. Item: Whirlwind Effect: This unleashes a tornado that will cause any player to spin out if they get too close. Item: Shield Effect: When the magic shield is used, you will be invincible to all creatures, opponents, weapons and power-ups. Item: Ogre Strengh Effect: Grants the player strength and an ogre-sized increase in speed and acceleration. Truly brutal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. Track Items [tri03] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are certain items and various bonuses that you can utilize on race tracks to help you come out on top. They are as follows. Switches: Activate switches on the tracks by running into them. These will open up various shortcuts to get you ahead of the other racers. Keep an eye on out though, shortcuts may be open but their entrances are very well-hidden. Barrels: When you smash through a barrel you receive a random Power-Up. Very essemtial for strategy. Jump Pads (Purple): Huge gaps, long drops and raging rivers cut across the tracks. Ride through the purple trails to get a speed boost and launch your character into the air to clear these various obstacles. Speed Boost Pads (Blue): Present on every track, gives the player a boost of temporary speed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V. Character Roster [chr04] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a listing of every playable character in Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing. Complete with how to unlock them (if appropriate). Each racer has special attributes that differ among themselves, they are Handling, Acceleration, Speed, and Weight. Tournament [trn05] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A tournament consists of twelve consecutive races. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible in each race, in order to finish in the best position possible at the end of the tournament. Points are awarded based on each player's finishing position in the race. Playing through tournament mode is a fantastic way to unlock hidden characters and tracks. You will need to score first place at the end of each Cup Challenge (every third race) to unlock characters. After you complete the "Conventional" Tournament mode, you will unlock a new mode of play called Mirror Mode. Mirror Mode allows you to play the various tracks you're all too familiar with...except with a twist. Everything in the courses is flipped - what's on the left is now on the right, and things of that sort. Playing through Mirror Mode Tournament or Cup Challenges is the only way to unlock the remaining hidden characters and tracks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VII. Cup Challenge [cuc06] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each Cup Challenge consists of three races. The objective is the same as any tournament - to accumulate as many points as possible in any given race. Your goal is to win first place at the end of the Challenge - which is always the third race. You can unlock hidden characters and tracks by placing first in any given Cup Challenge. Cup Challenges are basically the same thing as Tournament mode, except that instead of 12 consecutive races you race in three different tracks each, depending on what Cup you are currently participating in. It is also a handy substitute in case you missed an opportunity to unlock a hidden character or set of tracks in the main Tournament mode. The following is a listing of every Cup in the game, complete with what Tracks comprise said Cup, as well as what you have to do (if anything) to unlock them. Swamp Cup --------- Tracks: Swamp ==> Green Forest ==> Haunted Woods Difficulty: 1/5 Unlocked: Available from start of game Far Far Away Cup ---------------- Tracks: Suburbs of Far Far Away ==> Downtown of Far Far Away ==> Far Far Away Castle Difficulty: 2/5 Unlocked: Avaiable from start of game Factory Cup ----------- Tracks: Farmland ==> Potion Factory Exterior ==> Potion Factory Interior Difficulty: 3/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in both the Swamp Cup and the Far Far Away Cup Dragon Cup ---------- Tracks: Mountain Pass ==> Dragon's Castle ==> Dragon's Lair Difficulty: 4/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in the Factory Cup Mirror Mode: Swamp Cup ---------------------- Tracks: Mirror Mode: Swamp ==> Mirror Mode: Green Forest ==> Mirror Mode: Green Forest Difficulty: 3/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in the "conventional" Tournament mode Mirror Mode: Far Far Away Cup ----------------------------- Tracks: Mirror Mode: Suburbs of Far Far Away ==> Mirror Mode: Downtown of Far Far Away ==> Mirror Mode: Far Far Away Castle Difficulty: 4/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in the Mirror Mode: Swamp Cup Mirror Mode: Factory Cup ------------------------ Tracks: Mirror Mode: Farmland ==> Mirror Mode: Potion Factory Exterior ==> Mirror Mode: Potion Factory Interior Difficulty: 5/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in the Mirror Mode: Far Far Away Cup Mirror Mode: Dragon Cup ----------------------- Tracks: Mirror Mode: Mountain Pass ==> Mirror Mode: Dragon's Castle ==> Mirror Mode: Dragon's Lair Difficulty: 3/5 Unlocked: Complete and place first in the Mirror Mode: Factory Cup ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VIII. Quick Race [qkr07] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From "Single Player" select "Quick Race". Quick Race allows you to race on any and every track that you have unlocked thus far and lets you play as any racer that you have unlocked. You can set time records in Quick Races, but you cannot unlock hidden characters or tracks. Quick Race is really for practice more than anything, or if you are just looking for a few quick races without having to go through Tournament and Cup Challenge modes. I highly recommend going through Quick Races before you attempt to take on the "big-time" races, just so you are accustomed to all of the various paths of each track. You can and will face off against racers that you haven't unlocked yet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IX. Time Trial [tmt08] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Single Player mode only. Race against the timer in order to try and get the best time possible. If you do well enough your results will be saved to the top three Records stats of whatever track you are currently playing on. This mode is pretty much just for more practice, and for bragging rights. You cannot unlock hidden characters or tracks by playing it. If you're obsessed with completing tracks as fast as you possibly can, this is the mode for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X. Frequently Asked Questions [fra11] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Can I restart a race? A: Yes, simply pause the game and you will see an option to restart the race you are currently in. A: What's on the top and bottom screens of the DS in this game? A: Top screen has the player's position (upper left corner), what Power-Up the player currently has (if any) and the lap status (upper right corner). The bottom screen has a map of the track you're on, along with where each racer is, as well as the elapsed time (upper right corner) and the position of each racer in terms of current place (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th). Q: How many total playable characters are there in this game? A: There are twelve playable characters in this game. Four are unlocked from the very beginning. The other eight must be unlocked. Q: How many total tracks are in this game? A: There are twenty-four tracks in this game, with six unlocked from the very beginning. The other eighteen must be unlocked. Q: Is there online play via Nintendo Wi-Fi? A: Sadly, no. I thought there was, interestingly enough several game art boxes that I looked at before purchasing the game have the Wifi logo on the upper left hand corner of the box which would normally indicate there is. But there isn't it, and my case copy doesn't have the logo. Perhaps it was planned during development but was scrapped later on? Who knows. Q: What's that arrow flashing on the top of my screen mean? A: It means you're going backwards. Q: How are points allocated? A: By the player's finishing position. First place gets 4, second nets 3, third will receive 2, and the loser...er, person who placed fourth, gets 1 point. Q: What can I do in the Options menu? A: Manage Profiles, Edit the Sound level, view your Records for every track, and view the game Credits for Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XIII.
