Introduction * ******************* Who hasn't heard of parents telling their kids that their brains will rot if they play too many video games? Well what if there was a game that could actually stimulate brain activity rather than dull it? That's exactly what Nintendo hopes to accomplish with its DS game Brain Age, inspired by the work of neuroscientist Dr. Ryuta Kawashima. Brain Age uses a series of tests to determine how old your gray matter is. Depending on how you perform, your Brain Age can range from 20 years old (ideal) to 80 years old (worst). Most individuals find that their Brain Age decreases after playing for a few days, but not everyone can get down to 20, and that's why I'm here to help. With this guide, I hope to help you bring your Brain Age down by at least a few years, if not more. ***************** * 3. Quick Play * ***************** Quick Play is essentially just a demo of the game. It's perfect if you only want to play for a couple minutes or if you have a friend who doesn't want to create a new profile. QUICK BRAIN AGE CHECK: Take the Stroop Test to find your approximate Brain Age. You're given 50 words, and your job is to recite the color of each word, not the word itself. For example, if the word "Yellow" is written in black letters, you should say "Black." Once you finish, you will be given your Brain Age range (i.e. 20s, 30s, etc.). QUICK TRAINING: Solve 20 simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems as quickly as you can. This is the same as the Calculations x20 exercise from Daily Training, except your time is not saved. QUICK SUDOKU: Complete a Sudoku puzzle. The puzzle you receive is a randomly selected Basic puzzle. ********************* * 4. Basic Training * ********************* Unless you're a crazed Sudoku addict, this is where you'll spend most of your time with this game. After creating a profile for yourself, you can keep track of your Brain Age and complete the training exercises to earn stamps. You can earn one stamp per day by completing a training exercise, or you can earn a bigger stamp by completing at least three exercises in a day. Earn enough stamps and you can unlock some pretty cool stuff. Below is a list of what you can get with your stamps: 1 stamp - Low to High training exercise 2 stamps - Syllable Count training exercise 3 stamps - Head Count training exercise 5 stamps - Tips option 7 stamps - Stamp Designer option 9 stamps - Hard Mode for Head Count training exercise 11 stamps - Hard Mode for Calculations x100 training exercise 13 stamps - Triangle Math training exercise 15 stamps - Time Lapse training exercise 17 stamps - Hard Mode for Triangle Math training exercise 20 stamps - Voice Calculation training exercise ******* BRAIN AGE CHECK ******* Since your Brain Age is only saved the first time each day you do a Brain Age Check, I recommend doing the Training exercises first to warm-up your brain. When you opt to do a Brain Age Check, you will be asked if you are in a quiet environment where you can speak. If you respond "Yes," you will be given the Stroop Test followed by two randomly chosen tests from the following list: Word Memory, Speed Counting, Connect Maze, Number Cruncher, and Calculations x20. If you respond "No," you will be given three of the four following tests: Word Memory, Connect Maze, Number Cruncher, and Calculations x20. Once you're finished, you'll find out your Brain Age. Remember, 20 is ideal, and 80 is the worst. To help you gauge how well you need to do in order to have a Brain Age of 20, I have included target scores for each test. They are only approximations, but I have found that if I come pretty close to each target score, I can usually get a Brain Age in the lower 20's. Tip: If you hold the Select button while choosing "Brain Age Check," you can choose which tests to take and in what order you'll take them. Otherwise, the tests and order are random. WORD MEMORY: In this test, you're given two minutes to memorize a list of 30 4-letter words, and then you have three minutes to write down as many as you can remember. Target Score: 20 words Tip #1: Try memorizing words in groups. It helps to associate words by their sound, spelling, or definition. Also try and create compound words (i.e. snow/ball, door/bell, etc.) - one word is easier to remember than two. Tip #2: The handwriting recognition is a bit fuzzy sometimes, so just remember to dot all i's and j's, use long stems (i.e. the letters b, d, h, k, p, and q), and close your curves (i.e. the letters a, e, g, o, and p). If it helps, you can also use capital letters interchangeably with lower case letters. The following list includes all 300 words that may appear in this test, arranged alphabetically. A: arms B: baby back bald ball band bang bank bark bath bear beds beef bees bell bend bird blow blue boat body bomb bone book brow bulb buns bunt burp busy buzz C: cake camp cans cape card carp cars cart cash cats cave chew city claw club coin cold cook cops cord core cowl cows crib crow cute D: damp dank date dead deep dime dine dirt dish dive dogs door dope drip duck dune E: each edge eggs evil eyes F: face fame fans five flea flip flow fool foot fork four fund G: game gang gate germ girl give gnat goal goat gong good gore grin grit grow guns H: hail hair halo hand hang hate head heap heat hens hide high hill hive hold home hone hoop hope horn hump hunt hurt hush I: inch into iron J: jaws jazz join juke jump K: keen kick kids king knee L: lace lake lame lamp land lass lazy left legs liar life lime limp line lion live lobs logs loon loop love luck lump lust lynx M: mail mall mash mask meow mice milk mill miss mist moat monk moon mope mops more mugs mule mush N: nail nest news nine noon nose note nuns O: oops P: pain pans pets pick pier pine pink pipe play poke poof pool poor pots pray prep puff punk punt Q: quit R: rage rail rain rare rate rats rich ring ripe rips road roar rock roll roof room rope rose rude rush S: sand sash sass saws seat sham shoe shut sing slap slit slob snap snow snug soap sock sofa song soup stay stop suit sulk sunk swig T: tags tail take talk tall tear tend them this tick time tips tire toad tomb tone tong toss town tree trip tubs tune U: ---- V: ---- W: wail wait wall want warm wean what when wimp wing with wolf wool X: ---- Y: ---- Z: zing zoom STROOP TEST: As with the Quick Brain Age Check, you're given 50 words, and your task is to say the color of each word, not the words themselves. The four colors are black, blue, red, and yellow. Target Score: 1 min. Tip #1: One common strategy for this test seems to be focusing between the screens so that you cannot make out the words but can only see the colors, but this is in effect cheating. You just have to put yourself in the mindset of naming the colors you see, not what the words say. I know it's tough, but that's the way the test is meant to be taken. Tip #2: The game is pretty picky about how you say "blue." From what I can gather, it doesn't like when you spit the word at it. End the word with the back of your mouth, not the front - give it a clean cutoff. It should sound like "bloo", not "blu." If the game doesn't recognize you the first time, just stay calm and repeat yourself, slightly altering the pronunciation to see what works. Although you may be tempted to, it doesn't help to yell or overly exaggerate the word. SPEED COUNTING: Real straightforward - count from 1 to 120 as quickly as you can. The game does not attempt any voice recognition, so be honest with yourself. Target Score: 45 sec. Tip: Try to time your breathing so that you take breaths after numbers that end in 9 (i.e. 29, 39, etc.). There seems to be a natural tendency to pause briefly between prefixes, so why not breathe then? CONNECT MAZE: Your task is to connect the labeled circles in the following order: (left-->right) A-1-B-2-C-3-D-4-E-5-F-6-G-7-H-8-I-9-J-10-K-11-L-12-M-13 Target Score: 30 sec. Tip: Before you put your stylus on the A circle, take a quick second to examine the layout of the other circles. By remembering the locations of just a few circles, you can save yourself searching time later on. NUMBER CRUNCHER: Several numbers of different values, colors, and motions will be scattered about, and you'll be asked to count how many numbers of a certain type there are. Values range from 0 to 9, the colors are the same as in the Stroop Test (black, blue, red, and yellow), and there are three types of motion (pulsing, rotating, and sliding). Target Score: 1 min. Tip: Keep your eyes focused just below the words "How many" at the top. That way, you will know immediately what you need to look for. CALCULATIONS X20: You will be given 20 simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems to solve. Target Score: 15 sec. Tip: Always look ahead. While you're writing out the answer to the current problem, begin solving the next problem so that you can answer it as soon as it comes up. ******* TRAINING ******* Here, you get to exercise your brain, earn stamps, and unlock cool stuff. You can do the exercises as many times as you want, but only the results of your first time will be saved. CALCULATIONS X20: This is the only training exercise that is also sometimes used in the Brain Age Check. Just solve 20 addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems in as little time as possible. Tip: Always look ahead... CALCULATIONS X100: The same as Calculations x20, just five times as long. To unlock Hard Mode, which adds division problems to the mix, either earn 11 stamps or complete this exercise in under 90 seconds. Tip: As with Calculations x20, always try and solve the next problem while you're writing the answer to the current problem. With this exercise, however, mental fatigue begins to slow you down some about halfway through. Just try to stay focused and maintain your concentration. READING ALOUD: Read the given selection from a piece of classic English literature as quickly as you can. The game says that it's OK if you read to yourself, but it really is better if you read out loud since that forces you to pronounce tricky words rather than skip over them. Tip: It helps to have a broad vocabulary, but if you do run into an unfamiliar word, try to pronounce it as best you can. Additionally, don't spend too much time trying to figure out how to pronounce proper names - just pick a pronunciation and go with it. Below is the list of literary works from which the excerpts for this exercise are taken, arranged alphabetically by the authors' last names. The list can also be found on page 49 of the instruction booklet. - Alcott, Louisa May: Little Women - Anderson, Sherwood: Winesburg, Ohio - Austen, Jane: Emma; Pride and Prejudice; Sense and Sensibility - Bierce, Ambrose: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge - Bronte, Emily: Wuthering Heights - Brown, William Wells: Clotelle: A Tale of Southern States - Carroll, Lewis: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Chopin, Kate O'Flaherty: The Awakening - Conrad, Joseph: Heart of Darkness - Cooper, James Fenimore: The Last of the Mohicans - Crane, Stephen: The Red Badge of Courage - Defoe, Daniel: Robinson Crusoe - Dickens, Charles: A Christmas Carol; Great Expectations; A Tale of Two Cities - Douglass, Frederick: My Bondage and My Freedom - Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan: The Hound of the Baskervilles; The Lost World - Dumas, Alexandre: The Count of Monte Cristo - Eliot, George: Middlemarch; Silas Marner - Emerson, Ralph Waldo: Essays - First Series - Fielding, Henry: The History of Tom Jones - Franklin, Benjamin: The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin - Hawthorne, Nathaniel: The Scarlet Letter - Henry, O.: The Gift of the Magi - Irving, Washington: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Jacobs, Henry: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself - James, Henry: The Turn of the Screw - Lincoln, Abraham: The Gettysburg Address - London, Jack: The Call of the Wild; To Build a Fire; White Fang - Melville, Herman: Bartleby the Scrivener; Moby Dick - Paine, Thomas: The American Crisis - Poe, Edgar Allan: The Cask of Amontillado; The Pit and the Pendulum; The Tell-Tale Heart - Richardson, Samuel: Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded - Shelly, Mary: Frankenstein - Sterne, Laurence: The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy, Gentleman - Stevenson, Robert Louis: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Treasure Island - Stoker, Bram: Dracula - Stowe, Harriet Beecher: Uncle Tom's Cabin - Swift, Jonathan: Gulliver's Travels - Thoreau, Henry David: Walden - Trollope, Anthony: The Warden - Twain, Mark: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court - Washington, Booker T.: Up from Slavery: An Autobiography - Wells, H.G.: The Time Machine; The War of the Worlds - Wilde, Oscar: The Picture of Dorian Gray - The Constitution of the United States of America - The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America LOW TO HIGH: A set of numbers will appear briefly in a formation, and your job is to tap the locations of the numbers in order from lowest number to highest number. If you get a sequence correct, the next formation will have one more number to remember. If you make a mistake, the next formation will have one less number. There are a total of 10 formations. Tip: It works better if you try to memorize the actual numbers rather than the order. Once you have the numbers memorized, you can work out the order from there. SYLLABLE COUNT: You'll be given a series of 10 sentences, and you have to count the total number of syllables in each. Some sentences you may recognize as popular adages, while others you may have heard elsewhere. Tip: It helps to at least mouth the sentence as you count syllables, especially when there are words with three or more syllables. And try as best you can to keep the count in your head - counting fingers may be more reliable, but it takes longer. Below is a list of expressions that appear in this exercise. The number in parentheses following each expression indicates the number of syllables. A bad cause demands many words. (8) A bad penny always turns up. (8) HEAD COUNT: Keep a tally of the number of people inside the house as numerous groups enter and leave. At first, they only use the front and back doors, but in Hard Mode, they also come and go through the chimney. Tip: It's easier to calculate the net gain/loss during each interval and add/subtract that to your total rather than adjust your count up and down every time. For example, if two people leave and three people enter, add one to your count instead of subtracting two then adding three. TRIANGLE MATH: Given a row of three numbers (four in Hard Mode), perform the indicated operation for each adjacent pair to obtain a new row of numbers, then repeat until you're left with only one number. Tip: You will need to work with both positive and negative numbers, so be comfortable with each. Remember, adding a positive is the same as subtracting a negative, and vice versa. TIME LAPSE: You will be shown two clocks, and your task is to determine how much time has elapsed between them. For each set, the "after" clock will become the "before" clock of the next set, so you'll only have to read one new clock in each set (except for the first set, of course). Tip: Rather than follow the hands, I like to convert each clock to a digital readout then simply subtract. It makes things easier for me, but if following the hands of the clock works better for you, by all means use that method instead. VOICE CALCULATION: Like the Hard Mode of Calculations x100, you must solve a series of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems as quickly as you can. In this exercise, however, there are only 50 problems, and you use your voice to answer them rather than your stylus. Tip: As with Calculations x20 and Calculations x100, always try to keep your eye on the next problem as you're answering the current one. ******* GRAPH ******* Use this option to view your Brain Age progress as well as your progress in the training exercises. Tip: If you hold the Select button while choosing "Graph", you can view the top 3 lists for all Brain Age Check tests and unlocked training exercises. Tapping a high score entry will show you who achieved it. ******* OTHER OPTIONS ******* Here, you can change your settings, delete your profile (under the Settings menu, select "Erase personal data"), edit your signature, or view the staff credits. If you earn enough stamps, you can also customize your stamp design and unlock a list of Tips you've collected from Dr. Kawashima. Below is the full list of Tips that you can receive: 1. Your belly needs food, doesn't it? Well, so does your brain! And breakfast is key! A morning meal helps your brain run better. Your brain is usually at its best in the early morning. So, let's make sure it has the energy, or carbohydrates, that it needs! 2. You brush your teeth when you wake up, right? I hope you do! While you brush your teeth, try counting all the brushstrokes. This will help to wake you up and warm up your brain! 3. The daily commute is a great brain training opportunity. Try to read all of the billboards and signs as quickly as you can. Doing so will help to activate your prefrontal cortex. But make sure to keep your eyes on the road if you're driving! 4. Look at people on the street and try to guess how they are feeling, then put those feelings into your own words. Speaking imagined ideas puts many areas of your brain to work. 5. If your train or bus is so crowded you can't even open your newspaper, try reading all the advertisements instead. See how many you can memorize in thirty seconds. This is good general training for your prefrontal cortex. 6. Listen closely to the news on the TV or radio, and then try to summarize all the stories in three to four minutes. 7. Look around you and count all the numbers that you can see, then add, subtract, multiply, and divide them until you get an answer of one. Performing simple arithmetic really wakes up your brain. 8. Walking around can also present brain training opportunities. Try counting the number of steps you take as you walk. Couting uses both the left and right prefrontal cortex hemispheres. 9. Say, do you try to work or study with the radio or TV blaring away? This kind of multi-tasking splits your brain focus and lowers efficiency. 10. It's only polite to make eye contact when speaking to another person. Eye contact does two things. First, it improves your communication. And secondly, it gives your brain more information to work with. 11. Cell phones and e-mail have made our lives more convenient, but you can't rely on those tools alone. You must seize every opportunity for conversation! By engaging in direct conversation with many people every day, you will be forced to use words and gestures that stimulate the brain. 12. Before you start to work or study, take a moment to prioritize your goals for the day. Such prioritization is actually very good brain training! 13. Imagining an image and then creating it is good for the prefrontal cortex. Painting a picture, for example, or sculpting something out of clay. Make sure that you create what's in your mind. Don't use a model! 14. Think of the names of all the things around you, and then try to think of as many related verbs as you can. So, for the word "pencil", you might think of "scribble" or "roll." 15. Even a large and noisy dinner party presents training opportunities. Try shutting out the loud hullabaloo of conversation and concentrate instead on the voice of one specific person. 16. Do you have any subconscious habits? I know you do! Your brain suffers when you lose conscious control of your actions. Try to curb habits such as fidgeting or biting your nails. Doing so is excellent training for your brain! 17. You can easily learn people's names when you first meet them. Just repeat the name silently to yourself over and over! Try telling yourself "I'm going to remember" as you do this. 18. Do you like to eat out for lunch? If you find yourself doing so frequently, try going to new places at least once a week. Your brain needs new stimuli on a regular basis. 19. Have you had a good laugh recently? Like they say, "laughter is the best medicine." And it's good for your brain, too! 20. Even bad puns can be good for your brain! I know they often aren't very... punny! Hoo hoo ha! But if you can stomach them, they'll really help your brain. 21. Checking the route you take to school or work will help activate the brain. Your brain gets tired of the same stimuli day in and day out! 22. Singing a cappella is also a form of brain training. If you have the guts, try singing karaoke without any music! 23. After a hard day of work or school, cool down your brain with TV or video games! Even these simple things could improve your overall brain efficiency! ************* * 5. Sudoku * ************* Brain Age includes a total of 120 Sudoku puzzles - 40 Basic, 40 Intermediate, and 40 Advanced. In each set of 40, there are four tutorial puzzles and 36 regular puzzles. For the purposes of this guide, I have numbered the puzzles as they appear on the menus, numbering from left to right, top to bottom, beginning with #1 on page 1 and #21 on page 2, as seen in the illustration below: [1] [2] [3] [4] | [21] ... ... ... | [5] ... ... ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | ... ... ... [20] | ... ... ... [40] (page 1) | (page 2) For those of you who are unfamiliar with Sudoku, please allow me to explain. A Sudoku grid is a 9x9 grid composed of nine 3x3 subgrids. Each 1x1 cell holds one number from 1-9, and in order to solve a Sudoku puzzle, every row, column, and 3x3 subgrid must contain each of the numbers 1-9. Simple enough, right? Because there are so many great websites and articles out there related to solving Sudoku puzzles, I'll refrain from delving into strategy discussion too much. If I had to give one bit of advice, though, it would be to take advantage of the feature that allows you to jot notes in empty cells. In each empty cell, if you note all Options (possible entries for that cell), it becomes much easier to use logic to fill in the rows, columns, or 3x3 subgrids. If you ever get stuck, try jotting notes in the empty cells and see if it helps at all. And now for the solutions... ******* BASIC ******* 1. If comparing your Brain Ages isn't good enough, you can compete head-to-head
against up to 15 friends via the DS's wireless link. The only multiplayer
activity available is Calculations x30, where you and your friends see who can
answer 30 math problems the quickest. The results of the round are displayed
afterwards, so you can see exactly how everyone did.

You can also send a demo of the game to another DS. The contents of the demo
are the same as those of the Quick Play option of the full game - a Stroop Test
for determining approximate Brain Age (i.e. 40s), a practice Calculations x20
exercise, and a Sudoku puzzle. The demo is lost when the other DS is turned
off.

* 7. Surprises *
****************

On some days, before you begin your training, Dr. Kawashima will ask you a
question relating to your daily life. Several days later, he will ask you to
recall your answer, so be sure to remember what you wrote!

These are the possible questions he may ask you:

- What did you eat for dinner yesterday?
- What's the best thing you heard or saw on the news yesterday?
- What was the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?
- What did you eat for breakfast today?
- What was the first thing you said today?
- What color are the clothes that you're wearing today?
- What's the most interesting thing you saw on TV yesterday?

On other days, you may be asked to draw a series of three pictures. When
you're finished, each of your drawings will be compared to a prerendered
illustration, and you will be asked to focus on a certain aspect of the
illustration and see if it appears in your drawing. If there is more than one
profile saved on your game card, the doctor will host a gallery showcasing
everyone's drawings side-by-side so you can all compare your artistic skills.

NOTE: The set of illustrations found in the North American version of the game
is different than the set found in the European version (thanks to user
Weirdosport for alerting me to this). Of the 81 total illustrations found in
each version, 24 are completely different, 16 are the same illustrations except
with different names (e.g., King Tut in North America vs. Tutankhamun in
Europe) or different descriptions (see Armadillo or Shakespeare, for example),
and the other 41 are identical. Many of the differences are due to region, but
some of them have no apparent explanation.

Below are the things you may be asked to draw, with the details you should
focus on in parentheses following each item:

NORTH AMERICAN VERSION:
- Abraham Lincoln (gaunt face)
- Africa (comma-like shape)
- Anchor (pointy ends)
- Armadillo (armored body)
- Australia (twin peninsulas)
- Backhoe (large shovel)
- Baseball Pitcher (throwing form)
- Beethoven (hairstyle)
- Beetle (large mandible)
- Bicycle (two wheels)
- Binoculars (two cylinders)
- Biplane (dual wings)
- Bulldog (wrinkly face)
- Bulldozer (treaded wheels)
- Bumblebee (striped body)

* 8. FAQ *
**********

Q: How do I delete a profile?
A: From the main menu, select "Daily Training" and then the profile that you
wish to delete. From here, select "Other Options," then "Settings," then
"Erase personal data."

Q: Where can I access the pictures I've drawn for Dr. Kawashima?
A: Unfortunately, there is no way to manually access your pictures. After you
have drawn and saved your set of three pictures, if pictures have been saved on
any of the other profiles, you will automatically see a gallery of the pictures
from all profiles the next time you open your profile. Once you view these
pictures, however, you will not be able to view them again.

Q: Why is my Brain Age so high? I'm not that old...
A: If you've only played the game once or twice, there are probably a few
voice/handwriting recognition issues that are artificially inflating your Brain
Age. Also, as Dr. Kawashima says, you shouldn't worry too much about a high
Brain Age if you're under 20 years old since your brain is still in
development.

Q: Is this game suitable for left-handers?
A: Yes, the developers did not forget about lefties. When creating your
profile, you will be asked which hand you use to write. If you're a lefty, you
will turn the DS so that the touch screen is on your left instead of your
right.

Q: Does this game really make you smarter?
A: No, but that is not the game's intent. Instead, it is designed to
stimulate and exercise your brain in order to keep you mentally active and fit,
which it does very well.
Q: Why doesn't the game like how I say/write ...?
A: The voice/handwriting recognition in the game isn't perfect, so often minor
adjustments in how you speak or write can help the game recognize you better.
Try different things and see what works best for you.

Q: Is this game worth the $20?
A: Absolutely, especially if you plan on sharing with your family. Even if
you're the only one playing, as long as you have an interest in staying
mentally sharp, you should definitely get your money's worth.

Q: Brain Age, Brain Age 2, or Big Brain Academy - which should I get?
A: If you're new to the Brain Training games, your best bet is to start off
with Brain Age. In my opinion, it's much easier to transition from Brain Age
to the other two games than it is to transition from either of the other games
to Brain Age. If you find that you really enjoy Brain Age, go ahead and try
Brain Age 2. Or, if you want something less regimented or just something
different, give Big Brain Academy a look.
