The BCless Quest is where you try to get as many stars as possible without activating any cannons or without activating the Power Flower Blocks, also known as "?" Blocks. The full name of the quest is the "?" Blockless/Cannonless Quest, and the full abbreviation is the "?"B/Cless Quest, but it's usually just shortened down to BCless. Many times, getting stars involves the use of glitches, which will be detailed in this FAQ. Hopefully, this FAQ will help you. Please note, this is not a regular Walkthrough. Most of this guide assumes you’ve gotten 150 stars (or are close) at least once, and at least know the game pretty well. This quest was originally created on the GameFAQs SM64DS board, and was based off the CCless quest in Super Mario 64. We're proud to be able to get as many stars as we can with this, but we will not stop until we have found ways to get them all. ------------ Credits - CR ------------ I decided to get the credits out of the way first. I’d like to thank the following people: Mike O'Shay, for giving me all of the information I needed to start this FAQ. Mike O'Shay is basically the founder of this guide, as he was the discoverer of many of the BCless stars. He also one of the very few people to get all 136 BCless stars, and he's constantly searching for new ways to get the unobtainable ones. Also, he's been tons of help with editing this, too. Peteyboo, for helping me with certain glitches necessary for the BCless Quest. Swordless Link, for his fantastic glitch FAQ that helped me enormously. Anyone who wrote an SM64DS FAQ, for helping me figure out what things I needed to put in here. If anyone thinks they deserve credit, contact me. ------------------------ Contact Information - CI ------------------------ My email address is brabbit18@comcast.net, but I don’t check it frequently, so your best hope would be to AIM me at dwayne4593 with any questions, comments, or concerns. You can also contact Mike O'Shay for other BCless-related questions at Mike OShay 1022 on AIM, or mike1022_@hotmail.com for MSN. ---------------------- Legal Information - LI ---------------------- This guide was created by TheFrigz. Now that all of that is out of the way, let’s start with the good stuff. ----------------------- Unobtainable Stars - US ----------------------- There are a total of 136 possible BCless stars. The following stars are currently unobtainable following the requirements of the BCless Quest: Castle Secret Stars: The Secret Under the Moat 8 Red Coins, Behind the Waterfall Secret Star, Over the Rainbow 8 Red Coins, Goomboss Battle 8 Red Coins, Big Boo Battle Secret Room, and Chief Chilly Challenge 8 Red Coins. Bob-omb Battlefield: All stars are obtainable. Whomp’s Fortress: All stars are obtainable. Jolly Roger Bay: Star #6: Switch Star of the Bay, and Star #7: Through the Jet Stream. Cool, Cool Mountain: All stars are obtainable. Big Boo’s Haunt: Star #6: Eye to Eye in the Secret Room. Hazy Maze Cave: Star #3: Metal-Head Wario can Move. Lethal Lava Land: All stars are obtainable. Shifting Sand Land: All stars are obtainable. Dire, Dire Docks: Star #6: Inside the Cage. Snowman’s Land: Star #6: Into the Igloo. Wet-Dry World: All stars are obtainable. Tall, Tall Mountain: All stars are obtainable. Tiny-Huge Island: All stars are obtainable. Tick Tock Clock: Star #1: Luigi in the Cage, and Star #7: Tick Tock Silver Stars. Rainbow Ride: All stars are obtainable. A BIG thank-you to Mike O'Shay for providing me with this list! Onto the stars. Note that I will only be writing guides for stars that are hard to get BCless. ------------------------- Bob-omb Battlefield - BOB ------------------------- *Star #5*: Mario Wings to the Sky Character: Luigi This is very hard to do, so don’t get discouraged. From the top of the mountain, backflip and hold B and spin onto the floating island. From here you can reach the first coin. Back on top of the mountain, backflip spin into the second coin, and again, for the third. The next two coins, however, are unobtainable by using this method. This is where the tricky part begins. You go to the slope near the bottom of the mountain with the red coin on it. Climb the slope, and turn around. Angle yourself to the right, facing the steep hill to the right. Long jump onto this hill, slide kick immediately and aim a bit left. If you got lucky, you’ll crash into the wall, and fly very high up into the air. Now you have to land on one of the coins, and then do it again for the last coin. A video of this Heaven’s Portal glitch can be found here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mJ7mss5d-MM The glitch is the very first one shown. After all 5 coins are gotten, get the star, and pat yourself on the back. *Star #6*: Find the 8 Red Coins Character: Luigi The first 7 coins are easy, the 8th one you just backflip to the island to get. Easy. *Star #7*: Behind Chain Chomp's Gate Character: Anyone Some people use Luigi's invisibility to get this star, so this will explain how to get it without. Get to the wooden post that Chain Chomp is... chained to. Ground Pound on it until it is all the way in the ground. Be careful not to get hit by him, or you'll lose health. After this is done, Chain Chomp will crash the fence down, leaving the star open for you to get. --------------------- Whomp’s Fortress - WF --------------------- *Star #3*: Shoot into the Wild Blue Character: Mario / Alternate: Yoshi or Luigi This star is usually intended to be gotten with the cannons, though there are actually two simple alternatives to doing it that way. First method: From the start, get up to the area with the shallow water and the ring of coins. Continue heading left, past the Pink Bob-Omb that would activate the cannon. Go down the ramp, to the area with the blue coin switch. From here, you should triple jump against the brick wall and wall jump at the peak of your jump. With a little placement, and some trial-and-error, you should land on the platform with the star. Alternate method: From the start of the level, make your way over to the two large Thwomps that are constantly smashing down on a stairway-like area. Continue downward and go to the place with an unactivated ? block and two red brick blocks. Go into the corner formed by the fence and the wall and stand still for a few seconds. You will teleport to an area with a large pole. Now you have to get down to the platform with the star, or the one just above it. If you are Yoshi, jump backwards off the platform slightly and flutter jump (hold B) to climb the air and hopefully land on the platform. If you are Luigi, just backflip and land on the platform after a nice, quick trip. *Star #6*: Blast Away the Wall Character: Any Yeah, it’s possible. Very hard. But possible. Choose the first star, and get to the top of the fortress. Challenge King Whomp to battle. Head over to the side of the platform closest to the shallow water and the ring of coins below. Once you’re on this side, make King Whomp fall. Jump, and aim for right where his crown meets his head. If you did it right, he’ll push you through the level, and you’ll land in water. Rules for being in this water: NEVER JUMP. The water won’t be there when you land, and you’ll fall to your death. Don’t go back onto land. Self-explanatory. The goal is to swim into the cannon. (Notice that this doesn’t violate the BCless rules because you never activated the cannon) Now you just shoot to the corner of the wall that you normally shoot at, and get the star. --------------------- Jolly Roger Bay - JRB --------------------- *Star #4*: Blast to the Stone Pillar Character: Luigi Easy enough, just get on top of the ship, and Luigi-backflip to the ledge with the star. Done. ------------------------- Cool, Cool Mountain - CCM ------------------------- *Star #4*: Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins Character: Yoshi 6 of the coins are obtained as normal, the two encased in ice are obtained by eating the nearby fires and melting the ice, rather than using a Power Flower. *Star #6*: Mario's Super Wall Kick Character: Luigi Normally, for this star, you'd use the cannon to get to the area where Mario wall kicks. Instead, you use Luigi's backflip from above the area, and gently float down. Now, instead of wall kicking, you can actually Luigi-backflip from platform to platform, resulting in an easy star. --------------------- Big Boo’s Haunt - BBH --------------------- *Star #4*: Seek the 8 Red Coins Character: Luigi 7 of the coins are obtained normally; the one in the main room high in the center of the room can be obtained by standing at the top of the steps, and backflipping to the coin. *Star #5*: Big Boo's Balcony Character: Luigi Some people think you need the Power Flower to get up to the third floor, when you can actually stand on the wooden platform near the door to the third floor and either wall jump (as Mario) or backflip (as Luigi.) After the star appears, you can get up there by long jumping or backflipping to either of the jutting-out areas of the house, then getting yourself up to the top section of the roof, going around, and getting the star. *Star #7*: Switch Star in the Basement Character: Wario Get into the basement. In the area outside the merry-go-round, there is a black box that only Wario can destroy. Break it, and then hit the switch. Even with Wario's slowness, you CAN make it around the merry-go-round in time, if you long jump when possible. Be careful not to fall into the water, and stay as inside as possible. You should make it. If you need to, you can put on a Luigi or Mario cap so you can run faster, but you may not need it. -------------------- Hazy Maze Cave - HMC -------------------- All (obtainable) stars are done the way they normally would be. ---------------------- Lethal Lava Land - LLL ---------------------- All stars are done the way they normally would be. ------------------------ Shifting Sand Land - SSL ------------------------ *Star #7*: Free Flying For 8 Red Coins Character: Luigi Here’s the way I do this star: From the start, turn around and head backward until you get the first red coin. Next, break the box in the stone structure for the second red coin. Now, head toward the Tox Box maze. After the first straightaway part, there is a fork. Take the right side. Jump across the killer sand, and you should see a black box that only Wario can destroy. Climb it, and long jump across the gap in the killer sand. You should see a red coin to your left. Get it, and then continue this way in the maze. At the end, get the red coin in the water, for number 4. Now, climb on top of the pillar near you. Luigi-backflip to the red coin nearest it. Do the same for the pillar next to it. Now, climb the ramp that leads to the pyramid’s entrance, and go right. Long jump over the killer sand, and climb the third pillar, backflipping for the 7th red coin. The 8th red coin is unobtainable from the fourth pillar. Get over to where Klepto is (where we got the 4th coin) and find the cork box. It’s not the one that sends you flying when you grab it, it’s the smaller one. Climb the last pillar with it in your hands. Get on it, and backflip to the last red coin. Congratulations! You are done with this hellish star! ---------------------- Dire, Dire Docks - DDD ---------------------- *Star #4*: Through the Jet Stream YOU MUST GET THIS STAR BEFORE BEATING BOWSER IN THE FIRE SEA. IF YOU BEAT BOWSER, THE SUBMARINE WILL DISAPPEAR AND YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO GET ALL 136 BCLESS STARS. Character: Yoshi This glitch is far easier in V1, however it is still possible in V2. I have V2, and it didn’t take me very long at all. I’ll post the different strategies for V1 and V2/EUR. For V1: Enter the area with Bowser’s sub. Swim under one of the little fins in the back. Jump, and you’ll get pushed underwater. You'll notice that when you try to jump out of the water, you instantly splash back down. Ground pound within this small timeframe, and you will be walking underwater. For V2/EUR: Do basically the same thing, but in V2 it was fixed where you could jump out of water if there’s something right above you, which slightly complicates things. What you need to do is swim so you are about halfway under the fin, but not completely under it. Now jump and ground pound. I found the hardest part about doing it was timing the ground pound. Now that you’re underwater, go over to the cage. Triple jump on top of it, and get the Luigi hat. Head over to the jet stream. Backflip onto the stream, and Luigi should hover there, not moving up or down, just spinning. Wait until 5 rings pass around you. Now, get off of the stream, and run into a clam to lose your hat. Go back over to the stream and eat the star with Yoshi’s tongue. Done! ------------------- Snowman's Land - SL ------------------- *Star #3*: Yoshi's Ice Sculpture Character: Yoshi As opposed to using a Power Flower to melt the ice, we eat the fire in the area with all the hatted Goombas. ------------------- Wet-Dry World - WDW ------------------- *Star #4*: Express Elevator--Hurry Up! Character: Anyone Some people get this star with Luigi's invisibility, so here's how you're supposed to do it. Get to the top of the tall cage (on top of which one of the 5 secrets appears) and head onto the left side of the wooden platform that juts out from the cage. It should start moving down. Jump off the side of the wooden platform, landing at the bottom. Go into the little opening in the fence, and when the platform reaches the bottom, jump up onto this side of it. It will bring you back up to the top, and you can get the star. *Star #6*: Quick Race Through Downtown! Character: Anyone Push the metal box near Chuckya into the corner, but leave a little space. (don’t push it all the way into the corner) Get on top of it, and go into first person mode. Hold down until you can’t look any farther up. Now rotate the camera around so you don’t see either wall, or the top of the box. Press B, and you should fall through the ground into some water outside the boundaries. This is tricky, but you swim right next to the pipe you normally swim through. You swim as close as you can without getting pushed inside. If you did it right the town should load fully when you swim past the load point in the middle of the pipe (You have to be swimming towards the town), and you’ll be out of bounds still. Swim up and under the cage, and get the star. Video of the falling through the box glitch can be found here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yQ0iiNDaChA *Star #7*: Soaked Silver Stars Character: Luigi One of these is actually hard to get. Get the four that are obvious, then head to the area where "Top O' the Town" is obtained. When on the platform with the aforementioned star, look in the direction of the silver star. Head down one platform, so you are on the spinning platform. When you spin closest to the star, backflip, and you may get the last star. This is tricky, so don't give up. Another method is getting on top of the tube with the two 1-Ups in it, then backflipping and getting to the star. ------------------------- Tall, Tall Mountain - TTM ------------------------- *Star #5*: Blast to the Lonely Mushroom Character: Mario or Luigi Get to the area with Ukiki. Run on the log, and long jump at the end. You can easily land on the mushroom this way. If you can’t get it, use Luigi’s backflip from the same spot. You could also use the owl to get to it, if you wanted to. *Star #6*: 5 Secrets of the Mountain Character: Mario or Luigi From the start, go into the nearby tree to release the owl. Use the owl to fly into the 5 "secrets" on the mountain (The five middle-coins at the level's top. >_>). If you're too impatient to wait for the owl to lower to the coins' level, just drop onto the circles and restore any lost health with the water. ---------------------- Tiny-Huge Island - THI ---------------------- All stars are done the way they normally would be. --------------------- Tick Tock Clock - TTC --------------------- All (obtainable) stars are done the way they normally would be. Many people ask why you can’t get Tick Tock Silver Stars. This is because for them to appear, you need to have gotten all the other stars in the level. Luigi in the Cage is not possible to get yet BCless, so neither is Tick Tock Silver Stars. ----------------- Rainbow Ride - RR ----------------- *Star #1*: Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow Character: Luigi Metal Wario isn't actually needed for this star. Here's an alternate method: Get to the top of the big house. Backflip in the direction of the star, and you can float down onto it, if you don't go into the wind. Other methods of getting this star include swallowing it with Yoshi, repeatedly long-jumping towards the star (you'll eventually reach it) and (dangerously) jumping around the wind. *Star #6*: Somewhere Over the Rainbow Character: Luigi Get to the top of the house. On the house, there should be a ! box in one of the corners. Get on top of it, and aim towards the island with the star. Luigi backflip to it. *Star #7*: Switch Star of the Manor Character: Mario or Luigi This is hard. While riding the carpet, the ride takes you into the house twice, and out of it twice. When it takes you into the house for the second time, long jump, run like hell, press the switch, run back like hell, and if you’re lucky, you’ll make it back onto the carpet before it disappears. If you do, ride up, and get the star. Also make sure to watch out for the fire in the house, as it seems to like knocking BClessers off the carpet on this one. >_> ------------------------- Castle Secret Stars - CSS ------------------------- *The Secret Under the Moat Switch Star* Character: Wario When you start the level, run to the right before you start the slide. Slide down, jump onto the wall to your right, jump again, off the side. If you don’t understand this, then just slide all the way down. Get to the Mario cap. Run back, to where the power flower box would be if you activated it. Angle yourself sorta towards the wall but more towards the platform you are trying to get to. Triple jump, and wall kick, and if you’re lucky, you’ll make it on the platform. From there, run to the other side of the platform. Triple jump against the wall at the edge of the level, and wall kick, you should hit the other wall, continue wall kicking up, until you get to the top. Then dive over and wall kick up the next set of walls, getting to the star. Congratulate yourself. *In the Sky 8 Red Coins* Character: Mario This isn't against the rules, as long as you don't hit the switch. You're using the Power Flower, but the challenge is BLOCKless, not FLOWERless. Get this star as you normally would. *Power Star of the Mirror Room* Character: Luigi Again, you aren't breaking the rules by using the Power Flower in the mirror room. Go ahead and get this star as you normally would as well. *Behind the Waterfall 8 Red Coins* Character: Anyone The 4 coins on platforms should be simple. The 4 underwater are a bit trickier to get. For the red coin nearest where the star will appear, what you have to do is get on the last platform, and angle yourself at about the left edge of the waterfall. Triple Jump and dive at that spot on the wall. Ground Pounding doesn't get you as far below the water and diving against a wall for some reason. If you are lucky, you'll land right on the coin. I'd suggest using Luigi to get this coin, as he is the tallest and will fall most easily into the water, likely landing deeper than the others would. If this doesn't work, adjust your angle and try again. The other 3 underwater you just jump in from the last platform and swim low, and get a little luck on your side. *Over the Rainbow Switch Star* Character: Wario Get into the Over the Rainbow area. (no brainer, right? >_>) Using first person mode and the touch screen map, face towards the cloud with the tree and black box that only Wario can destroy. Get a running start and Long Jump to it. You should make it on the edge. Now just break the block and get the star. *Big Boo Battle 8 Red Coins Character: Mario or Luigi 7 coins are easy; the one that is normally floated to with Mario's Power Flower can either be wall jumped to as Mario or backflipped to as Luigi. *Chief Chilly Challenge Switch Star* Character: Luigi Get into Chief Chilly Challenge. Get the Wario cap. At the fork, go left. On this little bridge, you have to run almost completely against the wind, but partially to the opposite side. The wind may push you off a bit, but you'll come back on somehow and keep running, Continue this until you get to the other side. Break the block and get the star. I hope this guide has helped you obtain all 136 BCless stars, and I hope we can eventually succeed in our goal to get all 150 someday.
