Game description. Fushigi Dungeon is a 2D action-RPG that plays somewhat like an ultra high-resolution version of Legend of Zelda (NES). The main attraction to this game is intended to be nostalgia for “old-school” gameplay. As such, the high level of difficulty will force the 21st century gamer to lower his/her goals from winning the game to merely attaining a high score, in which a list is accessible from the main menu. Although it may be difficult to get far into the game, replay value is still high because level maps are randomly generated; the gamer can play “1000” times without seeing the same map. Attacks feel like real-time but are actually turn-based; you alternate hits with your enemies. Magic wands and secondary weapons can be equipped and mapped to other buttons to give you more options for attack. Visuals are beautifully realized in high-resolution sprite-based characters and colorfully detailed backgrounds. The background music style is from traditional Japanese culture, and the sound effects are crisp. One’s main complaints for this otherwise stellar game might be the hunger meter and save system. Although you automatically recover life after sustaining damage, an ongoing hunger meter must be replenished with frustratingly randomly appearing items such as herbs and rice balls (black & white triangles). Secondly, there are NO continues after dying. The game will only allow you to save (1) a file to continue if your character is still living or (2) your high score after “game over.” Nevertheless, this is a creative and fun game. I hope this FAQ will enable those interested to overcome the language barrier and experience Fushigi Dungeon for themselves. 5. Links. Interested in finding more information about this game?
