=============================================================================== Summer Camp FAQ --------------- Copyright (C) 2006 hammunition. All rights reserved. Version 0.8, with some holes 1. FAQ History -------------- This is the first walkthrough I have written for a computer game. There may be easier or higher-scoring routes through the game than the one I have given. I have tried to minimize the backtracking and to avoid sections that though probably achievable will likely kill you. Also I have tried to avoid requiring the ability to shoot right at the start of a level, because this is only possible if you had firepower at the end of the previous level, and if you are on the first attempt of the level. I welcome your feedback, especially as this is the first FAQ I have written, so please email any thoughts you have on this FAQ or on this game to mrfregs at hotmail.com. (Address has been anti-spammed, remove the .) 2. Game Info ------------ Name Summer Camp Publisher Thalamus Year 1990 Format Commodore 64 This game was also released on the Amiga. I haven't played that release so don't know if there is any difference apart from the improved graphics. In-game Credits Concept code & grafix John Ferrari Music & fx Mark Clements Captain Dave "JLG" Birch 3. Synopsis ----------- It is summer time at Wot a Dump camp. But the camp flag (Stars and Stripes) has gone missing! Suspicions lie on Maximus Mouse having eaten it. It is up to him to retrive the flag from the space aliens who stole it. Summer Camp is a cartoony platformer where you control Maximus Mouse through four levels. Each entails collecting crates containing parts of vehicles that will take you on to the next level. At the end of the level you have to play a game where you have to press buttons in the correct order to build the vehicle against a time limit. If you succeed you get points, if you fail it doesn't matter, you can still play on. If you lose all your lives in level then you can re-try the same level, without having to go back to level 1. 4. The Screen ------------- Top left: Your score, your energy. The maximum energy you can have is 99 5. Controls ----------- Joypad, or keyboard controls: Left P Right O Up Q Jumps or climbs ladders Down A Fire SPACE You fire, if you have bullets, in the direction you just pressed. Hence after jumping you are by default firing up, but you may shoot downwards, sideways or even diagonally by indicating the correct direction. 6. Blocks --------- When Maximus jumps into the bottom of these blocks something happens. Mousetrap Kills Maximus Parachute Protection against falling from heights once 8-Ball Drops a ball that can be used as a platform or rolled into enemies. You may run on the rolling ball. If you hit Banana Shield - temporary invulnerability Butterfly Smartbomb - destroy all enemies on screen Helicopter Flight Balloon Flight - move upwards in the direction you hit the block, until you hit something. Then you fall. Rocket Flight Apple Energy Cheese ,, Ice lolly ,, and turns Maximus blue Melon Firepower - gives Maximus 32 bullets Jelly Actually I don't know what this is meant to look like but bounces Hook Maximus hangs off these, and only drops when fire is pressed 7. Power ups ------------ Shooting an enemy may cause a power up to appear. Smiling face: 1000 pts Clock: Freezes action on the screen Heart (rare): Extra life 8. Walkthrough -------------- Where a room has distinguishing features I have named it. Positions of crates are marked with '1'. The room you start in is marked 'START'. Going off the edge of the map as I have drawn it will make you appear on the opposite edge. 8.1 LEVEL 1 - The Camp ---------------------- Map: -------------------------- | Old | Hive | Heli- | |Faithful| |copters | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |--------+--------+--------| | | Wot a | House | | | Dump | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | START | | | | | | | | | | |--------+--------+--------| | Gold | Two | Forest | | Ghost | Sheds | | | Mine | | | | Town | | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | -------------------------- Jump on the kite and as you travel to the left collect the melon. Climb down the rope, then shoot the snake. Jump down to the bottom of the screen and hit the ball at an angle to set off a rolling ball to kill the rabbit. Collect the crate (1). Move back to the ball and hit it straight this time, towards its right. Jump on the ball and exit the screen to the right. Now you are in the forest. Shoot the bouncing head, the rabbit and the skunk. Jump across the gap and collect the crate (2). Now go back and fall into the gap. You land in a place with lots of sky. There is a crate immediately to your right but ignore it for now. Jump off the platform you landed on to the platform to the left and exit the screen to the left. You arrive in a room with a beehive and you are being attacked by a swarm of bees. While you are touching it your energy will decrease quickly so don't stand about doing nothing. Jump onto the branch of the tree and across to the other side of the screen. If you fall down it is difficult for you to get back up again so be careful. Exit the screen to the left. "Old Faithful" is spitting out deadly drops of water. Stand on the bouncing ball and jump and hit the ball to release a rolling ball that will extinguish the geyser. Now you may collect the crate (3) safely. Stand on the bouncing ball, and, timing your jump carefully, go back to the beehive screen. Drop onto the rock at the bottom left and either shooting or avoiding the snake collect the crate (4) at the right of the screen, then go back left again and drop down. You are back where you started the game, because this level wraps round on itself. Avoid the dog and the falling apple and collect the crate (5). Drop to the bottom of the screen, travel across on the kite and exit left. Collect the crate (6) guarded by the jumping head and the two vultures, then go back round (right, down, left). Collect the popsicle for points and to turn Maximus blue. Exit the screen down. Now you are in Gold Ghost Mine Town, oddly with the same name as Level 2. Hit the butterfly block to destroy the shooting tornado and collect the crate (7) before leaving the screen. If you leave the screen and come back the tornado will have returned but the butterfly block will have gone. If you want hit the melon to get more bullets. Now exit to the left and you are back in the forest screen. Exit by the same exit as before, but this time collect the crate (8). Hit the parachute and fall down. The parachute will open on landing and save your life. I suggest you get the banana because it is hard to avoid the chickens. Collect the final crate (9), thus completing level 1. Vehicle : car 8.2. LEVEL 2 - Ghost Town ------------------------- Map: ----------------- ----------------- | Hay | Hay | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------| |Outside | Donkey |Outside |Salloon | | | | Live | | Jail |Entrance| | | | | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | | START | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ----------------------------------------------------- This level is easier to find one's way around than the last one, and the only wrapping around is from right to left. Jump off the chair to hit the ball. Run on the rolling ball and use it to get to the top of the mousetrap. Jump onto the moving platform then onto the main platform on the right. Collect the crate (1). Jump onto the moving platform and onto the lower cloud. Get the ammo, then move to the upper cloud and jump off of the left hand side of the screen. You land on the roof of the town jail. Collect the crate (2) and if you wish the temporary invulnerablity. Now drop off of the roof and exit left, watching out for the falling block of hay. You come to a room with a donkey. If you stand underneath him he will shit on you so watch out. (You can also jump up his ass and disappear for a moment - this may be a bug. ) CLimb up the ladder on the right. You must hit the butterfly to give you space to jump off of the ladder onto the sideways-moving dark platform. ... Climb up the ladder again. ... Return to the screen on your left. If you collected the parachute it will save your life if you drop down mising all platforms. Climb down the ladder and go on to the nest screen on the left. Stand on the anvil. Your aim is to jump on to the white moving platform without being ... Now you have the crate, go left once more. You are in something of a bar, with jugs of beer floating about. There is a cat with a top hat who may eat you. To get the crate you need to set a ball rolling and, running on top of it use it as a platform. Exit left. You come to a room with lots of ghosts that look like drops of water and a crate that you can't seem to get to. Don't worry though. Look at the room closely. The green square in the ceiling betrays an irregularity. Climb the rightwards ladder up to a bedroom. Exit to the right. The room you are in has a lot of deadly bottles moving about in a pattern. Shooting them turn them into a type of ghost that behaves the same way as level one's red hurricane. (Trivia: notice the same sprite is used for the shooting ghost, in a similar way to the shooting hurricane in level one.)Rather than using these to get up to the crate though, jump off the left end of the bed onto the chest of drawers. Collect the crate and go back to the screen you came from. Wait where you are until the yellow ghosts have come out their hole and disappeared into the other one, and when the blue ghosts are doing the same stand on the bed at the left end, shooting the .. from below as you pass it. Now wait for the yellow ghosts to do the same thing again and bounce up onto the platform. Wait for the blue ghosts to go past and then jump on the brown platform, collecting the crate. If you jump directly off the platform you need a parachute to survive. Vehicle: Mole (I think. The next level is underground.) 8.3 LEVEL 3 - Gold Mine ----------------------- Map: --------------------------- -------- | (*) |Passages| (+) | | | |Boulder | | | | | | Chute | | | | | ---| 1 | 1 | 1 |---| 1 |--- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |--------+--------+--------| -------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | String | START | | | | | | | | | | |--------+--------+--------| | Miner | Two | Hooks | | | Traps | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -------------------------- Going left off (*) takes you into a room. Going left again takes you to (+) and you can't go back. This level is even more confusing than level one. I am having difficulty working out the best route through the level because there seem to be so many possibilities. It also is much easier to die by falling from too great a height. There probably is a better route than the one I have given here, if you have any suggestions then just e-mail me. Exit the screen to the left. Head down the slope hitting the ball at angle as you go to kill the man and the pink plob with bouncing hat. Go back right but this time at the bottom of the screen. Take the ammo but not the balloon. Go back left and jump onto the bottom middle platform. You should be able to go up the left slope and hit the balloon without getting hit by the yellow rolling balls. Go back down the slope, and exit the screen to the left. Drop down the gap in the floor and go down the small passage to the left, in a room with lots of hooks. Watch out for the monsters coming out of the crack. You get to a room with two traps. Go left and jump on the leftmost platform to avoid the monster dropping out of the crack. Go to the next room. There is a mining man here (I first thought he was a chef and then saw his pick-axe. Climb up the ladder to avoid him. Go left again and you are back in the room with lots of hooks. (This level wraps round on itself as well.) Watch out for the blue bird and exit left. Go left and drop into the hole. Climb back out again and shoot and destroy the trolley. Go left again. Go past the dripping poison. To do this you should wait until the left drip is before the right one so you can just get through in time. When reaching the end of this part of the floor don't stop or the drops will kill you, but jump on top of the ladder. Exit the screen left, collect the crate, watch out for the falling stalactite and go past the barrier before it closes. Now climb down the ladder just after the barrier. Drop down, watching out for the drip and the crack. Go left, collecting the melon, and drop down to the bottom of the level. You want to jump across to the platform on the left hand side. Even though this jump looks easy you will have to jump quite close to the edge because the handle will knock you backwards. Now drop down landing on the platform at the upper left of the screen below. Go to the bottom of the screen, go down and then back up again. Now go left underneath the barrier before it closes completely. Get the crate, jump onto the small platform and then onto the jelly. Bounce vertically until you get the parachute on the screen above. Now bounce to the top right. Jump on top of the wheelbarrow, onto the platform and jump up to get the crate above. Now go back down and bounce across to the bottom left of the screen. Your parachute should save your life. Exit left, go to the middle and climb back up the right-hand slope. Go left and you will be where you started the game. Jump to the screen above and go right. Hit the balloon and float up. Shoot the pink blob who is pulling a lever to release balls that fall down a slope. Shoot him 5 times to kill him. Jump onto a screw, and go up the ramps. If you fall down you can get back up by jumping off the top of the balloon block, as long as you haven't used it yet. But then you have to go back to where you came in originally so that you can kill the pink blob again. Exit left. There is a caterpillar here that leaves the screen before you can get to it. Get to the bottom of the level and avoid the bullets being shot at you. Jump back across to where the ladder is and climb partially up the ladder, then jump. (Climbing up all the way will likely make you jump into a mousetrap. Collect the crate, and exit to the left. Above you lies the final crate. I spent a long time trying to work this caterpillar out. I was trying to shoot the caterpillar through a gap in the wall when I first enter the screen but now I realise that this doesn't work. I have managaged to stand right in front of it and nothing has happened. How did I do this? The barrier that stops you going back into the screen can be shot through and when you go back the caterpillar will change Maximus's colour to the colour of the segment that he is in. This had no practical value with respect to the main aim of the game that I can see, but is probably just a bit of fun. Get the crate, and drop down, avoiding the repetetive green drop and the pink monsters coming out of the crack. Vehicle: rocket 8.4 LEVEL 4 - The Moon ---------------------- Map: ----------------------------------- | |Hexagon | Sparse | Rail | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | <- Sky | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |--------+--------+--------+--------| | | | Plants | Ladder | | | | | up | | | | | | | | | | | <- Ground | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | | | | | | | | | START | | | | | | --------+--------+--------+-------- | The | Under | | Flag | ground | | | | | 1 | 1 | <- Underground | | | | FLAG | | | | | | | | ----------------- The last level. This level is special in that the pink ground here is bouncy. By repeatedly jumping you may reach higher and higher heights. First jump up and collect the banana. Fall down, collect the crate. Head to the left. Fall down the hole. ... Jump back out again. Shoot all the enemies on the screen, using directional shooting. Do not leave the screen or accidentally fall down the hole or they will all come back again. Stand on the plants to jump onto the lowest of the small grey platforms. These platforms will drop while you are standing on them down to a certain level. Jump onto the second, and then the third platform. When on the third platform wait for the platform do fully drop, then jump onto the platform underneath the rocket. You will not jump into the next screen if you do this. Collect the rocket and fly to the left of the screen and fly up. Watch out for the circles, the mousetraps and the eye shooting at you. Fly off the right of the screen as soon as you get the crate. Get the crate here too. The next crate in this game is unique in that you need flying capabilities to get to it. ... In this screen there is a circle of multi-coloured bubbles with a gap. When the gap has passed jump onto the top mousetrap and then quickly drop on the bottom one. The bubbles will move around you. At least that's the theory. In practise the first jump is difficult to do properly and you will probably die. In order to do the jump properly you need to be at the very end of the platform when you jump, on the small square at the end. Actually, what may be easier is using the rocket to fly across. If you managed that, you are now required to jump off the mousetrap at the right time, collect the crate, and as soon as you land head to the left and climb down the ladder, to the top platform on the screen below. Jump over and shoot from above the blue alien with tentacles, landing on its platform. You may now drop down the hole in the bottom of the screen. You arrive underground. When the robot moves to the left, climb down the ladder at the right and shoot at the robot which requires 8 hits to kill. You probably won't get him before he turns round and comes back so before he gets to close climb back up again. After a few times you will get him. Collect the last crate so you can get back to Wot a Dump Summer Camp, and collect the flag the collection of which has been the object of the whole game. If there are crates that you have not yet collected you also need finish collecting them before finishing. Vehicle: Flying saucer THE END A picture now loads of Maximus shaking the hand of who is presumably the camp owner. The Stars and Stripes flies once more and you are congratulated on your achievement. 9. To do -------- Well, I could have finishing complete enemy lists, or have a high score/best times and challenge people to beat them, but to be honest I don't think that will happen, as there are other games I want to move on to and this game is not so amazingly great to be worthy of such attention I think.
