This is a complete walkthrough for the Dirk's second quest. Whether you fear the Death Rays of the Throne Room, the Whirlpools of Ye River Caves or the complex path of the Mystic Mosaic, stand tall and brave! For I, Cobra1, shall help guide you and Dirk through this perilous quest, to yet again emerge victorious! /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |*********************************#story | Story*******************************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Dirk, after having successfully slain the mighty dragon Singe and rescued the fair Princess Daphne, he decides to go back and relieve Singe's castle of some of its loot. However, the castle has not become any less dangerous with in the dragon's absence. There are still many traps and monsters still lurking in the depths of the lair...Including the vile Lizard King, who has taken over the dragon's domain as if it were his own(well, it is now, but you get the point). But such details will not dissuade a brave knight like Dirk The Daring! As such, he will(with your help) enter Singe's castle once more, defeat the Lizard King, loot the castle of its valuable treasures and escape once more. It's a dangerous mission indeed, but you're up to the task...right? /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |*****************************#controls | Controls*****************************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Really, each section has its own set of controls which I include in each stage's own walkthrough. This section is really here just to avoid the random E-Mails I get on occasion, complaining that certain FAQs I have lack a Controls Section. /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |******************************#game | Walkthrough*****************************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ /-------------------------------------------\ |*****#caves : Level 1 - Ye River Caves*****| \-------------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- ***Boulders Section*** Left - Left Exit Right - Right Exit Center - Fire & Up ***Whirlpool Section*** Up - Speed Up Down - Slow Down Left/Right - Move Dirk ---Stage Walkthrough--- Arguably, this is the hardest stage in the game. You must pass a total of 14 screens without flaw. One screw-up and you restart from the first screen. The first and third sections are the Boulders part. To row past the boulders, push in the direction of the arrow FROM DIRK! For example, if the arrow is in the left of the selection of exits, push Left. To move into the center exit, push Fire and Up simultaneously. Just Fire or Up alone will not work. You'll move onto the next section after 4 screens of this...Sorry, but the arrows are random every game, so there is no pattern. You'll just have to remain alert. The second and fourth sections are the Whirlpools. The "wake" from Dirk's boat is immune to the Whirlpools' effects, so that part may touch them without harm. Simply look for an opening and speed past them to reach the next section/end of the level. /--------------------------------------------\ |*****#boulder : Level 2 - Boulder Alley*****| \--------------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- Up - Move closer to giant boulder Down - Move away from giant boulder Fire - Jump ---Stage Walkthrough--- Move up and down to dodge the small boulders that will try to roll into you. Do NOT try to jump over them! Use jumps to clear the black holes in the ground only. Try to remain in the center of the alley. Too close to the giant boulder and you might get sucked under...Too far away and you might not see a boulder or hole in time to dodge it. The stage will USUALLY end when the giant boulder turns bright white, orange and pink, but occasionally it will last a little longer than this(not often, but it does). /-----------------------------------------\ |*****#throne : Level 3 - Throne Room*****| \-----------------------------------------/ A puzzle room. The correct sequence is as follows(with the reason for doing so in parenthesis afterwards) : Left(Hand), Right(Ray), Fire(Hand), Up(Ray), Left(Ray), Down(Ray), Up repeatedly(electric thing on floor, you need to jump it 9 times)(Push up just when the thing is nearly surrounding Dirk's right knee, earlier as it speeds up), Right(Ray), Up repeatedly(electric thing on floor, you need to jump it 9 times)(Push up just when the thing is near Dirk's left foot), Up(Ray). /---------------------------------------------------------\ |*****#lizard : Level 4 - Dungeons Of The Lizard King*****| \---------------------------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- Direction - Move Dirk Fire - Swing Sword(when you get it) ---Stage Walkthrough--- Your goal here is to retrieve your sword from the golden pot and then use it to slay the Lizard King. You may use any of the doors to move from one area to another, or use the center doors to simply move between the floors. You cannot cross the lines on the floor, but your opponents can. Your main threat is actually the little black rat-like creature in this stage, not the Lizard King himself. However, both getting bopped with his scepter or touching the rat will instantly kill you. When you see the pot, move fast to grab the sword, else it will teleport elsewhere. Again, this stage is random, so I cannot tell you exactly where or when the pot will be. When you do get your sword, run up to the Lizard King and dice him fast! Then, simply leave the current room to exit the stage. /-------------------------------------------------\ |*****#horse : Level 5 - Magical Flying Horse*****| \-------------------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- Left/Right - Move Dirk ---Stage Walkthrough--- Fairly simplistic. Move left or right to dodge the walls, skulls and fireballs that will come flying out of the background until the stage ends. All objects will ALWAYS fly towards your current location, so just a little movement will get you out of harm's way. The skulls and fireballs will not kill you, but they will slow down your horse, making it harder to avoid walls, which WILL kill you! On the fifth hall-color change, you'll exit the level. /----------------------------------------\ |*****#doom : Level 6 - Doom Dungeon*****| \----------------------------------------/ Another puzzle room. The correct sequence is as follows : Right(Flames), Up(Flames), Fire twice(Snakes), Right(Flames), Fire(Spider), Left(Nothing, but if you don't move fast enough, flames will surround you without warning), Fire(Spider), Down(Flames), Nothing(The flames on the right wall are harmless), Left(Flames), Right(Spider), Right(Flames). /-------------------------------------------\ |*****#mosaic : Level 7 - Mystic Mosaic*****| \-------------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- Direction : Move Dirk Fire - Swing Sword ---Stage Walkthrough--- This stage requires NONSTOP-MOVEMENT! If you hesitate for even a second at the wrong time, you will likely fall to your death. Therefore, do not pause on any square except for the EXACT amount of time specified. I will give the directions you need to move in with occasional(Wait X shifts) in the text, where X is the number of "board" changes to wait for before you continue the pattern. The correct pattern is as follows : Up 2(Wait 3 shifts), Right 2, Down 1(Wait 1 shift), Down 1, Right 3(Wait 1 shift), Right 1, Up 2(Wait 1 shift), Up 1, Left 4, Up 2, Left 2, Up 1, Left 1, Down 1, Left 2(Wait 9 shifts, you will likely have to kill the bat when he comes close), Left 4. Note : These moves must be made with very little hesitation. If asked, I can E-Mail you the nine screenshots of the Mystic Mosaic forms, allowing you to see the path before attempting this. /---------------------------------------\ |*****#mud : Level 8 - Mud Monsters*****| \---------------------------------------/ ---Controls--- Direction : Move Dirk Fire : Jump(on cliff edge) ---Stage Walkthrough--- Run to the left and get close enough to the center crater to lure a Mudman out of it, then quickly run further left and snag your sword(be careful not to fall in either crater). Back away from that crater and move as close as you can to the upper-left without falling into the chasm. The Mudman in the upper-right will begin slinging mud and eventually form a bridge for you to cross. After the fourth "mudball" lands, run across the bridge quickly! Too soon and the bridge won't be solid enough...Too late and a Mudman will appear on the bridge, preventing your victory. Hurry to the upper-right corner of the cliff and wait for the mud geyser to spray. The moment it goes out, press Fire to leap over to the mud bridge-maker. He'll die instantly and a cloud will appear out of his urn that will carry you up and out of Singe's castle! ****CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE VICTORIOUS!**** /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |******************#info | Tidbits or Miscellaneous Information****************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ * Despite the name, this game has NOTHING to do with Dragon's Lair II : Time Warp and is in fact based on the original Laser-Disc game of Dragon's Lair! Just like the first Dragon's Lair for the C-64, references abound to the L-D version! * The re-release of this game on the dual-pack boasted unlimited continues, but lacked the "mud death" picture in the final level. It also added a wait screen not seen in the original version. * The original box's back actually showed the final stage, just before the chasm leap to victory(would that count as a spoiler?)! /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |******************************#credits | Credits******************************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ Naturally, a HUGE thanks go out to Software Projects, the makers of this game! A large thank you goes to Rob Hubbard, without whose music I would have truly gone insane by now! I'd also like to thank GameFAQs for hosting this FAQ. Another set of thanks goes to my Commodore 128, for lasting as long as it has. A minor thanks also goes out to SwordLord, who unknowingly encouraged me into making this FAQ/Walkthrough... /------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ |*****************************#rights | Copyrights*****************************| \------------------------------------------------------------------------------/ "This may be not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use.
