KAM8: Credits -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM1: Intro | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "OH YEAAAH!" -Kool-Aid Man 'Kool-Aid,' a sacred phrase which brings thirst to those whom hear it uttered. It makes them thirst for the tasty drink that resounds with flavour and resonates with righteousness. 'Kool-Aid Man,' a large jug of Kool-Aid whose job it is to jump through brick walls and dispense Kool-Aid to the thirsty. A holy crusader, if you would. It's not hard to draw a conclusion as to _why_ I like Kool-Aid Man. While the pitcher has been around since before my time, he fit in particularly well with the late 80's/early 90's programming I would be used to. Was there a big stretch from the TMNT cartoon to the Kool-Aid Man? Besides, he hung out at the Wacky Warehouse Mall. So Kool-Aid Man got two games: one on the Atari 2600 and one on the Intellivision. In particular, the 2600 game is good. The premise is that Kool- Aid Man, the great guy that he is, is throwing a party in his backyard. Now, he invited a crew known as the 'Thirsties." They do get particularly thirsty and even try to drink Kool-Aid Man (KAM)'s pool! So what's a pitcher of juice to do? Give them a drink of Kool-Aid of course! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM2: Gameplay | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= All that is required of you in Kool-Aid Man is to move. The Thirsties want a drink and you have to bump into them when they go to drink out of your pool. If you touch a Thirstie whom is not drinking your pool, you will be bounced away. Here is a mock-up of the playing screen: +----------------------------------------+ | 000000 | <--- This is your score. | 60 | <--- This is the time remaining. +----------------------------------------+ | | T | | <--- This is KAM's backyard fence. |_| |_| |_| T |_| |_| |_| The T and K are just Thirsties and |_| T |_| Kool-Aid Man. |_| K |_| |_| T |_| | --________________________________-- | | | | | <--- This is the water level of | | | | Kool-Aid Man's pool. +----------------------------------------+ So to win, you need to give drink to about 30 Thirsties. You lose by running out of time OR running out of pool. Getting 30 Thirsties takes you to a faster stage. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM3: Thirsties | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= There are two forms of Thirstie: Moving and Drinking. These are the guys that KAM invited to his party, and they are technically your enemies. You know what they say: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Moving Thirstie: / /_ \ \ / The Thirsties kind of look like these little bombs. Moving Thirsties move back and forth across the screen on a horizontal plane. However, don't expect them to be _that_ simple as they can make tight turns at their leisure. They can change direction rapidly so try to keep some distance. What you do is note that Thirsties often disperse along the screen like this: T T T T T Alright? So you're bound to get bumped anyways, but keep distance between KAM and the Thirsties and weave in between them. Let's use "D" as a drinking Thirstie for a moment. T /D T .------ / T K However, while KAM is an evasive character, don't be surprised if the Thirsties just catch you by surprise. It's bound to happen. Drinking Thirstie: | /_ _\ \ / || || || <--- Straw || || || Thirsties are only vulnerable when they drink. Note that you can move through the straw, it will not bump you, and touching the Thirstie removes it from the screen. Ok, so it takes a few seconds for the Thirsties to decrease the level of water by any significant amount. That doesn't mean you can slack! There are usually two drinking Thirsties at a time so get to them as quickly as possible. Don't lose control or your pool will be in a dire condition. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM4: Pool | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The pool is technically a lifebar for Kool-Aid Man. The party's over if the pool is drained, and that is exactly what the Thirsties want: the pool's water. The Pool is located at the bottom of the screen, and looks somewhat like this: ---___ ___--- |__________________________________________| | | | | | | When a Thirstie begins to drink: ---___ ___--- | | | | |------------------------------------------| | | The water level drops. If the water empties, the screen goes black and you've lost. It takes the the Thirsties a few seconds to make a dent in the pool, so while this is relative to the time limit a "long time," it can compromise your situation tremendously. The best way to solve a water loss problem? Prevention. However, if you pick up any of the three items, your water level will rise again. So go after the items when you see them, unless of course doing so hurts more than it helps. When is this the case? When you'll be tossed around like a rag doll by some Thirsties when you try to get the item. There are usually two Thirsties drinking at the same time, so the pool is usually guaranteed to take a hit. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM5: Items | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= +-+ +-+ +-+ |K| |S| |W| +-+ +-+ +-+ Here's a question: What are the three ingredients of Kool-Aid? Water, Sugar, and Kool-Aid Powder of course! As discussed, getting any of these items will restore the pool to some degree. Yet they also have an added property. Normally, KAM is just a small pitcher about the same size as any of the Thirsties. When he gets sugar, water, or Kool-Aid powder, he becomes a much larger pitcher, with the characteristic face of Kool-Aid Man. While enlarged, you are _invincible_! No Thirstie can hurt you so take the path quickest to each drinking Thirstie because you can't be bumped. Be mindful that you will only be in this form for a few seconds. Overall, the major boon of the items is the restoration of water, though the invincibility certainly doesn't hurt. Literally! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM6: Bounce | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= So what's a Kool-Aid pitcher to do when he's being bounced around? Sadly, there is nothing you can do. You just have to wait it out, but you you should stay focused on where the bouncing KAM is headed. This is because control will be restored more or less abruptly and you will want to be heading in the direction of drinking Thirsties as soon as possible. The problem, however, is that Kool-Aid Man can bump other objects while being bounced. Kool-Aid Man bounces against the following things: Moving Thirsties Backyard Fence Pool Forget for a minute that KAM is capable of reducing brick walls to rubble and so his fence must be made of some miracle material. This means your bouncing can be kept up for a few moments. Check it: | T | / \ K | / \ / | / \ / | / T | / | / |/ |\ / | \ / | \/ Pool While this can become aggravating keep assured that; -Without hitting anything, KAM will quickly regain control. -The bouncing path is relatively eacy to predict. How about bouncing on 0 or 90 degree angle? Yes, it happens. | | <------ K | = | | K -------> | How can one stop midbounce? This is only possible by chance. If KAM gets an item while bouncing, he will stop. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM7: Atari or Intellivision? | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Alright, you may be wondering which version of Kool-Aid Man you should get? Atari 2600 or Intellivision? Well the collector's answer: both! But the truth of the matter is that Kool Aid man does not have different versions. They are completely different games! The Intellivision game involves two kids sneaking through a house. You try to complete a pitcher of Kool-Aid so that Kool-Aid Man can take care of the Thirsties in your house. Unfortunately, the game is incredibly frustrating and not nearly as fun as the 2600 game. Overall, I recommend sticking with this game over the Intellivision game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | KAM8: Credits | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Thanks to General Foods for Kool-Aid, it has been a tasty drink for the summer for as long as I can remember.
