Version History ============================================================================= Version 1.0 (02/22/05): Initial version of document - it's complete. ============================================================================= 2. Introduction ============================================================================= Jungle Hunt is not to be confused with the disney movie. Yes, they both take place in the jungle, but their aren't any animals in this game, or at least any cool ones. In this small game, you're a guy that lost his wife to natives. As a... err... jungle person, you have to swing from vine to vine, swim in crocodile-invested rivers, jump over boulders, and jump over natives to rescue your wife. Yep, that pretty much sums it up. ============================================================================= 3. Dedication ============================================================================= I dedicate this guide to all Atari 2600 gamers out there. They really keep this system alive, even though it seems "dead." Atari 2600, in a lot of people's minds, was the first gaming console ever created. This really isn't true, as there were other obscure systems before it. However, this was most people's first video game system. This is the system that brought them into gaming. And so, I dedicate this guide to the Atari 2600 gamers that still play this old system and keep it alive. This guide is also dedicated to Brian P. Sulpher and AboveAverage. Brian for showing me that you can write for very old systems. AboveAverage for showing me which system to write on... the Atari 2600! ============================================================================= 4. Controls ============================================================================= Fire Button: Used to jump or let go of vine. Joystick: Used to move the character. Down (On Joystick): Allows the character to crouch. ============================================================================= 5. Story ============================================================================= "Let me introduce myself: Sir Dudley Dashley is the name, and big game hunting is my game. It was, anyway, until yesterday afternoon at 4:00 (teatime, you know) when my wife, Lady Penelope Dashley (Lady P. for short) was kidnapped from camp. It simply ruined my whole tea service! Seems that a couple of savages saw Lady P. and decided to cook her up for their own tea! Soon after Penelope was captured, the jungle drums started beating. My porters translated the message-they tell me it's some sort of jungle memo: To: The Cannibal Community From: The Cannibal Restaurant Society RE: Teatime We have a special on today's menu! Our soup du jour is Englishwoman broth, made fresh today and served promptly at 4:00. Don't miss this special teatime treat, brought overseas from the wilds of England! Directions to today's meal are as follows: Take eleven vines through the deadly forest, turn right into reptile river, go past fourteen crocodiles and emerge on the edge of the boulder field until you reach Cannibal Camp. Jump past the two guards (watch out for spear tips), turn left, and...you're there! Bon Appetit!" (As taken from IRoger's walkthrough on GameFAQs.) ============================================================================= 6. Walkthrough ============================================================================= --------------- Swinging Vines: --------------- =========================================================== ----------------------------------------------------------- \ \ \ \ \ \ \ <- Vine \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ =========================================================== Falling: Instant Death Swinging: 100 points This is probably the easiest level in the entire game because it's really tough NOT to swing from the vine to vine correctly. As you are swinging, try to memorize the point where you are most west. When that point comes up, press the fire button and you'll thrust yourself to the next vine. You should always make and have little trouble getting to each vine. After you get the hang of it you can easily do it in succession. Just remember to wait until you are the most west when the vine is swinging before you jump to the next vine. In the hard mode things are tough because the vines swing quicker and more random. Just take your time and plan out each swing for the hard mode. ---------------- Crocodile River: ---------------- =========================================================== ----------------------------------------------------------- Croc Croc Croc You ----------------------------------------------------------- =========================================================== Hitting a Crocodile: Instant Death Running out of air: Instant Death No way to score points in this level? Another pretty simple level, all you have to do is get passed a dozen crocodiles in the water. They will move up and down sometimes, but primarily the crocodiles just stay in one spot. Dodging them is pretty simple - all you have to do is ascend or descend according to where the crocodile is at. If they come in groups it could prove to be a bit tougher. Try to look at the end of the screen while dodging to see where the next crocodile is coming from and if it goes up and down or not. One last thing, your air bar will go down every five or so seconds, so go back up for air accordingly. I go back up for air every time their isn't a crocodile close by. The best strategy to get passed this level is to stay on the upper half of the water so you can get air easily. I usually just stay on the very top and only have to dodge two or three crocodiles in the entire level. It's basically the same thing in hard mode, only the crocodiles go faster and your air goes down quicker. However, this can easily be superseded by using the above strategy appropiately and staying on the upper half of the screen. If you do this, resurface every chance you get and try to dodge upward instead of downward to get air. ------------ Boulder Run: ------------ =========================================================== O <-Boulder O O You ----------------------------------------------------------- =========================================================== Ducking under Boulder: 100 Points Jumping over Boulder: 200 points Getting Hit by Boulder: Instant Death Now the main character is running across acres of terrain trying to find the natives that took his beloved wife! Well, it seems that the natives are throwing rocks at him, or something like that. For the small boulders, jump over them at the right time. By right time, I mean a little ways before the boulder. The main character jumps like he is pole vaulting, sadly, so this is very easy. Obviously, also do it a little ways before so you don't get hit by the boulder! You'll have to jump over a lot of boulders, so get used to jumping at the right time. The large boulders are different to get passed than the small boulders. They a bigger and bounce substantially higher than the small boulders. The best way to dodge one is to duck under one. Get the large boulder's bounce routine down and duck when the boulder is highest in the air. When you duck, obviously, you stop, so you don't have to worry about running into the boulder. You can also jump over the large boulders, but that's a bit tougher. You have to wait until it's just about to hit the ground before you jump or you'll run into the boulder. In hard mode, everything is a lot faster and tougher - you need pretty decent reaction time to jump over and under boulders. -------------- Native Attack: -------------- =========================================================== Enemy / Wife E E You ----------------------------------------------------------- =========================================================== Jumping over Native: 200 points Finishing Game: Time left times a set number Finally we get to kill the people that took your wife! Well, not really. You get to jump over them, though. At the start of the level, a native will charge you and stop. Don't worry about him hitting you because he won't walk any closer. He'll hop back and forth and basically taunt you into jumping over him. The best way to jump over the native is to wait until he's about halfway jumping west before you take the plunge over him. He should set back down and give you enough space to jump over him. Do this twice and you'll meet finally get to meet your wife. In hard mode, things are only a little tougher. Instead of the natives jumping like clockwork they will jump a little more spontaneously. No worries, though, as it's still easy to jump over them. ============================================================================= 7. Frequently Asked Questions ============================================================================= Question: How many levels are in this game? Answer: Four levels - they are actually just screens. Question: Does anything happen if you complete it and restart? Answer: Yep, the game gets a bit harder and faster. Question: Who are the guys at the end of the game? Answer: Those are the natives that took your wife. Question: Can you stab the crocodiles? Answer: I'm not sure but on my version I can't. Question: Help! I can't dodge the big boulders! Answer: They are tough. The best way to dodge them is to measure out where they will be highest in the air and duck below their. You can also jump over them while they are at their lowest point. Question: Do you ever get an extra life? Answer: Yes, at the 10,000 point milestone. Question: When did this game come out? Answer: I think it was 1983. Question: Can I play this with a friend? Answer: Nope. Question: My game doesn't work, how do I get it to work!? Answer: You might have a corrupted version of the game, or perhaps the old 2 K version, which doesn't work very well. Question: Where can I get this game? Answer: The Atari 2600 hasn't had any new games made for years, so you can't buy it from them. You can get the game at a garage sale or ebay, if you like. ROMs also work, if you have the game and it is broken, that is. ============================================================================= 8.
