And for you lucky PC Owners look into, INDYCAR RACING - INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY EXPANSION PACK, or INDYCAR II. by PAPYRUS SOFTWARE Gratuitous plug - this is probably THE BEST driving simulator on the planet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ] II) Various questions (a) ----------------------- Q: What is it ? A: Indy 500 (see note below) is the 4th or (whatever you want) in a series of high performance racing/driving sims that incorporates mind numbing texture mapping and polygon technology. (This is through the version 2 motherboard that was used in Daytona, however this is a beefed up version). this is a VERY VERY SIMPLIFIED version of indycar racing, with emphasis on the Indy 500 raceway. so expect blazingly fast races, and intense competition. Note : Other Sega Arcade Racing High Tech Simulators 1) Virtua Racing (F1 Type/Indycar) 2) Daytona (Nascar Racing) 3) Sega Rally Championship VS 1995 (Off road Rally) ->4) Indy 500 : Indianapolis Motor Speedway 5) Manx T.T (Motor Bike Racing) *6) Daytona 2 (Improved Nascar racing) [Projected 3rd q/96] [ Numbers 1,2,and 3 are available for Sega Saturn System ] [ Number 1 also available for Sega Genesis / Sega 32x also ] [ Number 5 is coming out 2nd half/96 for Sega Saturn ] [ Number 4 related game F-1 Live is coming out mid-96] [ Number 4 is projected for sometime next year ] [ Number 6 is being called Daytona Championship Circuit edition and is being modifed for the Sega Saturn Late /96] (b) ------------------------------ q: how is it? a: there are many different issues which will be addressed shortly. -overall the impression is excellent, it is a quantum leap from virtua racing ! -if you have never seen the prior games, be prepared for some major eye-candy, this game is one of the most realistic visual driving games yet.. (c) -------------------------------- q: music? a: not really sure, i can't hear it because it's turned down way too much on the machine i've tried. there are 3 different songs. 1 for each track. also there is a demo song that plays to show the different tracks. it's all very rock based, with lots of loud screaming guitars. -if the volume is too loud ask the operator to turn it DOWN, since you will eventually get a headache if you play it too long, if you can't hear it, ask them to turn it up, so at least you can hear the excellent engine sounds (d) --------------------------------- q: ranking out 10 point scale? ( compared to other sega games) a: speed/graphics : 9.5 (nothing is 10 yet) gameplay : 9.5 (9 is daytona,7 is virtua racing) difficulty : 9.5 (9 is daytona, 8 is virtua racing) handling : 9.5 (9 is virtua racing, 7 is daytona) overall : 9.5 / 10 -my impressions of course! -i don't know where ridge racer, and ace driver would go on the scale because those are from namco(c). (e) --------------------------------- q: speed of graphics? a: yes, the graphics refresh rate, and frame rate is higher than daytona, (possibly 60fps?) and even ridge racer and ace driver. there are NO popup problems that i could detect, Supposedly Sega might be working on the saturn conversion! , but due to the complexity of the game, it may not be possible to get an exact translation. arghhhhhhh [see rumors for latest info] -your field of view in the car, is about the same as daytona , and the above/behind view also has a similar field of view. -plenty of anti-aliasing on the road textures, and plenty of different ones, in fact, from the in-car view the lower 1/8 of the screen is also blurred and anti-aliased to create a new texture. -the road has various random patches like real ones, and not the generic randomized nascar roads. -plenty of polygon signs ,buildings, and other objects too numerous to mention. -there are so many signs and advertisements, you will not be able to take them in while you're playing, so forgot about even trying, and watch when someone else plays! (ee) ---------------------------------- bugs bugs bugs - none discovered yet! very good!!!! (f) ---------------------------------- q: speed and types of cars? a: remember these are indy cars, there are 2 kinds , 1 manual , and 1 automatic. The basic body is not recognizable to me yet, still need to look into it. Of course it's a F-1 type, but i'm still researching it. [ Note : Due to a trick it is possible to drive the PACE CAR, though it is not recommended due to loss in performance in its handling! ] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) manual vs automatic automatic - easy to drive, no shifting, slower acceleration coming out of turns, average handling if you know how to brake in conjuntion with accelerating ,don't know about top speed manual - harder to drive, shifting, faster acceleration coming out of turns, better handling, should have a slightly higher top speed (at least in manual mode) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) F-1 vs Pace Car -F-1 handles better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (g) ---------------------------------- q: settings? a: the default arcade settings are japanese for country/text : set to export/US car difficulty-normal time difficulty - normal credits - 1per coin currently you can expect to pay $0.50 - $1 for each game or 2-4 coins depending on where you are. there are 2 types of cabinets, twin and deluxe, also 2 versions were released: ================================== 1 revision A twin 2 revision A deluxe there are minor differences in them ------------------------------------ revision A twin - when you come in first you get a black and white victory video -your car can go up to 4-5mph faster than the deluxe version! See section 4 for details on all game settings for both types of machines (h) ---------------------------------- q: head to head? a: yes or solo, they had a linked version at the arcade in University of Houston, so i figure just like the other head to head games, you can link up to eight with a main master cabinet and several slave ones. (i) ---------------------------------- q: number of courses? a: 3 , INDY 500 (easy!), Highland (medium!), and Bayside (expert!). much more on each one later. Of course, only the first course is based on a real one, the others are totally fictious! NOTE : Through a trick , it is possible to play in mirror mode, where all the turns are reversed Left->Right etc. and also to drive the courses in reverse. (j) ---------------------------------- q: modes of play? a: championship only is the one where you race against , i think , 20-30 other cars to finish various numbers of laps of each course. k) ---------------------------------- q: could you be more specific on the laps? a: for normal races race laps diff start mode ------------------------------------ Indy 500 4 (easy) rolling start Highland 3 (medium) rolling start Bayside 3 (expert) rolling start ------------------------------------ for long races race laps diff start mode ------------------------------------- indy 500 20 (easy) rolling start highland 17 (medium) rolling start bayside 15 (expert) rolling start ------------------------------------- (l) ---------------------------------- q: controls? a:-standard steering wheel with feedback -6 gear shift (up and down controls) -standard metal gas and brake, adjustable sit down seats (no cushions!) -one release latch to the lower right on the front of the seat, -one start button (on left hand side) and TWO view button to its right (one red, the other blue), one zooms in, and the other zooms out. -fake control panel with 3 gauges(water, temp, and rpm) AM4!!!! and various fake switches -no clutch!!!!! (m) ---------------------------------- q: operation? a: put the money in, the computer waits to see if another player wants to get in, (you wait 20 seconds). [to speed up time, press the view buttons rapidily many times !!! ] if no one enters you have the choice of courses. then you pick one of the two cars (1 manual, 1 auto) [not including pace car] with the steering wheel, pick by either pressing start or pressing the gas pedal. the game starts and you are presented with an out of car view. each race starts from a rolling start. -the whole idea is to race a set number of laps for each course, and finish them in the allocated time, you have a certain amount of time at the beginning, and in each course there are certain checkpoints that add to the amount of time you can get, usually if you crash once, you might finish the course, but only if its a minor one, and you drive a near perfect set of laps after that. -if you are playing head to head, you can try to beat the other person, and the clock also, if you are behind, and the other person is finishing the course you still get to continue as long as they are making it to the checkpoints... -i think the first person decides the course, and if you pick different ones, the lower one wins out (beginner over moderate) -there is no time lap mode i think, or i don't know how to activate it yet?????? (n) ---------------------------------- q: do you have to wait to jump in? a: no , you can start even if the other player hasn't finished yet. (o) ---------------------------------- q: onscreen details? a: here are the various indicators. [ Visible at all times ] speed and rpm -------------------------------------------------------------------- there is a digital speedometer with large numbers and rpm meter (digital tachometer) with gear number on the lower right of the screen (the instrumentation is translucent so you can see the road through it) maps ----------------------------------------------------------------------- there is a map on the mid-right hand side, with position indicators. your position in the race is on the top right hand side. the arrows on the map, correspond to your car , and the other dots show the positions of all the other cars ----------------------------------------------------------------------- time indicators ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - fastest lap indicator for all persons , upper left - individual lap times , upper left [TWIN ONLY] - fastest section of track times, upper right - section of track times, upper right - Cumulative real time (adjusted for rolling start) cumulative lap time position ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - your position in the race is shown in the upper uppper left - Use the trick to show the cars position over them (see tricks) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (p) ---------------------------------- q: cars descriptions again a: car 32 - red/white/blue car 31 - yellow/black car 30 - green car 29 - mostly white/red car 28 - red/green lettering car 27 - green/red car 26 - light pastel green car 25 - white/red car 24 - red car 23 - orange/green car 22 - black/gold car 21 - red car 20 - light green car 19 - red/white/black car 18 - white/red car 17 - red/orange car 16 - blue/red car 15 - white/green car 14 - gold/black car 13 - white/light blue car 12 - white car 11 - yellow/red car 10 - dark green/red car 9 - red/white/blue car 8 - yellow/red/blue car 7 - blue car 6 - light blue car 5 - light pastel green car 4 - pastel green car 3 - orange car 2 - orange/light green car 1 - white/dark green (from the exterior view) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ F-1 ----------------------------------- red, white and blue paint job red on upper body blue on sides, and rear airfoil driver has white/blue helmet, blue on top front of car - cgi number 3 in white indy indy (script) circuit sega r&d am3 driver side - indy 3 - white side of car - indy 500 - white text on blue rear foil - indy - white text Pace Car ------------------------------------------------------- body) 2 door 4 yellow sirens flashing on top colors) blue with a white stripe down the middle text on door - official pace car (black letters, white outline) indy 500 may 29, 1995 (white text) on lower portion of door license plate on back - blue with indy in white text tires) black with white text just as another note, here is what is on the backs of the right hand seat. --------------------------------------------------------- [Number, 1 or 2] (Indy 500) NOTE :the same information is one the seat to the left ----------------------------------------------------------------------- handling ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - if there's a driving heaven, this is it! The car sticks to the road like you wouldn't believe, better than virtua racing even!!!!! car number ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -if you are player one, your car has a one on it, if you are player two it has two on it, i assume that when there are more players, they have their number on it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -whatever all of this is mostly subjective anyway, how are you supposed to quantitatively describe these attributes without comparisons anyway???? (q) ---------------------------------- q: be specific about the views. a: There are 6 views (2 hidden) [ see tricks ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) the on the hood, looking at the road flying by view, which supposedly a lot of experts use (i don't see how?) 2) the in car on the hood/in car hybrid view, this is similar to the hood view (view 1) of daytona - if you like realism, pick 2, (left view button), or speed (left view button twice) pick 1 - it seems like the turns are slightly easier to take in view 1,2 but i'm not sure, maybe you don't have to turn as much? 3) slightly above the back of the car view 4) the above and behind view (my favorite) view 4 in daytona. -these view gives you the advantage you can see your car and its relation to the road -you can judge the upcoming turns and see which direction your wheels are facing (important turn information) -you can also the distance and relation of other cars in reference to your position -you also get to see more scenery! 5) aerial view, much higher above the whole track, and behind the car - must use a trick to get this (hold both view buttons while playing or while car is starting) - very useful on first and second courses, hard with the third one - if you get used to this view be careful, because all the turns will seem different, and you will overreact, when you switch to normal views 6) reverse view, used for showing off, shows car from the front !!!!! - must use a trick to get this, hold a view button and the start button at the same time - you've got to be kidding!!!! use at the last second when you cross the finish line (r) ---------------------------------- q: what about control? a: this is probably the one biggest question that will affect whether you want to play it or not.. -basically the F-1 handling is much better than the Pace Car steering is sensitive, but feel free to yank the wheel quickly for a hard turn -a tight grip is needed to turn, somewhat like daytona, but a bit more responsive, the gas and braking handle like daytona, with large amounts of braking and hard pressure on the gas pedal giving the equivalent amounts of braking, or speed. -it will take you a couple of games to get used to this! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- overall - i would rate the car handling as the best above virtua racing which was rock solid absolute control and daytona - slide city - since you have no need to powerslide (explained later) don't worry above timing the brakes and turning , but you will need other important techniques ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - sorry i can't compare it to other games like outrunners or any thing else, i just don't play those other games that much.. (s) ---------------------------------- q: how hard is the game? a: well this is a tough question? here goes. degree of difficulty -------------------- [ hmmm, i'm not sure if it's me, or the machine, but where i play it is VERY VERY HARD TO FINISH 1st on the course, without driving semi-perfectly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ] for the seasoned virtua racing expert - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ unbelievably hard but not impossible to finish all 3 course after a week (i am not kidding) for the seasoned daytona expert - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ unbelievably hard but not impossible to finish all 3 course after a week (i am not kidding) for the new racing car person - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IMPOSSIBLE, except for maybe finishing the INDY 500 course (they are going to have to spend loads of dough to even finish the beginning course) for the moderate racing car persion - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- VERY VERY HARD to IMPOSSIBLE ( they wont have to spend as much >us$20 ) to get past beginner and maybe moderate ALL OF THIS IS ASSUMING THE GAME IS ON NORMAL/NORMAL DEFAULT SETTINGS. - Learn to use the automatic, but forget about finishing anyway near first! ITS MANUAL ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - This game will challenge you, and drive you crazy (ha-ha), if you want to finish 1st on all the courses. - dissapointed? well , don't be too much, because sega shortened the game (notice the number of laps for each course is pretty small) , maybe if you are lucky you will find an arcade that sets it to a very high amount of laps!! (t) ---------------------------------- q: why is the game so hard? a: there are a couple of factors ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) the cars are hard to handle 2) the enemy cars show intelligence and drive superbly 3) you have little room for error 4) you MUST LEARN TO DRIVE THE MANUAL CAR 5) ok, at least they give you turn indicators on whats coming up! u) ---------------------------------- q) any car damage? a) hmmm. if you have played this game for awhile, you may noticed a couple of things, your car does flip over,as do the others if you hit a lot of walls, your traction declines you will see all kinds of damage on the car if you crash, but since the game is so short, YOU NEVER NEED TO GO INTO THE PIT STOP. i have noticed the airfoil getting bent up on crashes, but that's mostly it. why is it there then? maybe there are settings that are a lot longer, where it will be critical? III) Course guide ---------------------------------- a) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE : The manual and automatic information below contain slightly different descriptions for the turns, the automatic is geared more towards the beginning driver while the manual is for the expert driver (however, ALL the courses can be mastered by both types, i'm just not as good with automatic) MY TURN TERMINOLOGY : STOLEN STRAIGHT OUT OF MY Sega Rally FAQ !!!! vocabulary and turn description ------------------------------------------ a) right or left b) easy , medium and hard c) very, long or ( none ) ------------------------------------------ examples.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) easy left - obvious, just barely turn the wheel at full speed you should be able to make the turn without losing any speed 2) easy right - same as above 3) long easy left - another easy turn, but the turn radius is much longer than the short one, so don't abruptly turn the wheel 4) long easy right - same as above 5) very long easy left - this turn is one of the longest in the game, you should not have to slow down entirely if you complete it just right 6) very long easy right - same as above 7) medium left - you will have to brake slightly, or downshift to take this turn , if you don't you will either hit the sides, or go off the road 8) medium right - same as above 9) hard left - you will probably have to power slide into this turn, don't know what a power slide is? read the daytona faq please 10) hard right - same as above -at some point these will abbreviated like EL,LEL,LMRM, HR for easy left, long easy left, long medium right maybe, and hard right. and placed into the course descriptions... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- b) IMPORTANT DRIVING AND HANDLING INFORMATION ------------------------------------------ here are few of my suggestions and tips for learning to handle the car better, and driving the car RANKED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1) learn to use the MANUAL OR FORGET ABOUT COMING IN 1st !!!!!! 2) Drafting behind other cars is THE ONLY way to get record times, fast laps, and beat the computer cars. There are actually starting patterns for each course. THEY REMAIN CONSTANT. In fact, once you learn the best method to pass cars, you will find yourself repeating the driving lines each time. You will gain variable amounts of speed as you draft behind other cars. Drafting is the technique where you approach a car from directly BEHIND it, and since the air resistance is more on that car, than yours. You will notice an increase in your speed, as long as you are positioned behind another car. What you can do is keep following that car until you are very close to it, and then at the last second, swerve around the car to the left or right, depending on the situation. This speed boost allows you to slingshot around the car at a much greater speed than normal. What you will end up doing is going at your maximum speed, draft behind a car, slingshot around it, and try to get behind another car as quickly as possible, and then draft behind that. This allows you to actually increase your speed again. At most, you can do this 3-4 times before your absolute top speed is reached. Of course, once you stop drafting, the air resistance increases, and you drop down to the normal maximum speed. If you are able to do this properly, you will gain valuable time, because you have travelled a greater distance with the added speed. This is most apparent on the first course, because of the tight traffic patterns, and the proximity of the turns. Once you pass all the cars, then you can deal with the lapped traffic. This is much harder to do on the second course, as it is more wide open, and the traffic is more spread out. The third course has too many turns, and not enough straightaways to take advantage of this. The best time to do this is on the first opening lap of each race, and your best laptimes should also be 3) practice practice practice, you must drive the courses many times to learn where you can push the speed higher and higher (i'm not getting paid by SEGA!!! really !!) learn how to take a turn but turning outward before turn, braking or downshifting, and turning into turn and speeding up out of turn it is important to find apex of turn and be able to execute it every time, even when there are other cars there !!!!!!!!!!!!! 4) the tires SHOULD NEVER EVER BE SQEALING, or HAVE SMOKE COMING from them, any time the tires are not in FULL CONTACT with the road, you are NOT AT FULL SPEED, understand? make sure the car tires are parallel to the road at almost all times [NO POWERSLIDES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT DAYTONA OR SEGA RALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!] 5) learn to yank the wheel to take hard turns, and don't use the brakes at all for some turns (see notes below) 6) learn to tap the brakes for hard turns, and not to constantly press down on them, when in doubt DOWNSHIFT (if you use MANUAL) otherwise you will have to be excellent with the brakes 7) NEVER TOUCH THE GRASS, WALLS, DIRT , CARS, or ANYTHING THAT IS not considered road (duh.....) NOTE :EXCEPT WHEN ----------------- exception to this, is on Bayside course, during one S-turn there is a bit of grass you can run over to cut a corner short!!! 7) learn best way to shift at appropriate speeds! Such as : Speed Gear ------------- 0-50 1st 51-100 2nd 101-120 3rd 121-160 4th 161-180 5th 181 6th 8) observe car patterns, there are definite breaks that you can/should get into so that you can overtake them at appropriate times Pre - Race Warmup Routine ------------------------- DO THIS FOR EVERY RACE / AGAINST COMPUTER OR ANOTHER PERSON ---------------------------------- 0) Adjust seat, put in money, and speed up selection if you want (see tricks) 1) Know which course you want to race If you want a mirrored or reverse race, be prepared to press buttons (see tricks) 2) Pick Car (F-1 or Pace) If you want to drive pace car (which is huge difference!) , or drive against pace cars (which doesn't make a difference!) (see tricks) 3) ALWAYS TURN ON EXTRA POSITION INDICATORS OVER CARS this way you get to see what position you're in, without having to look all the place and crash !!!! (see tricks) 4) Pick view that you want to drive with, while the car is doing the rolling start if you want the extra high view , be prepared to press buttons (see tricks) 5) Slam down on acclerator once the race starts or just keep it down on full !! also, be ready to upshift, depending on what gear it is in. c) INDY 500 Track ---------------------------------- i) -------------------------------------------------------------- | NOTE ALL MAPS ARE NOT TO SCALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | -------------------------------------------------------------- map --- <- North 6 Turn 3 5 4 Turn 2 /-----------------------------------------------\ / \ | | | | 3 7 | | | | | Pit area | \ /--------------------\ / \-------------------------------|---------------/ 8 Turn 4 ^ 2 Turn 1 1 | Start Grand Stands ii) ---------------------------------- Description : This course is an accurate representation of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Of course there are a few details changed for convenience, but nothing that major that will affect anything. Of course the fact that you don't get 200 laps for $.50 is kinda bad for business, so you get 4 laps, from a rolling start. Also note that it is basically 4 left turns (or right in mirrored mode), but at Turn 1, and Turn 3 you have a lot more time to react to turning. This is the easiest course, and once you master turning its all over. BUT , the trick is that there are PLENTY OF OTHER CARS to mess you up. And if you want to get really good, you will have to draft like crazy. Note : Drafting is a phenomenon which occurs when you are behind other cars and use the fact that they are getting the turbulence from the air in front , and your car is not! This will give your car and added speed boost. IMPORTANT OBSERVATION ---------------------------------------------------------- As a final note, since there is no way in the world you can finish this course 1st, because you start in last place at the beginning, what Sega has done is that on the 2nd lap, about halfway through, a GIGANTIC crash will take place, and if you're careful, you can gain the 10 or 15 places ahead to get you in position to finish. (see Course Analysis later) [*NOTE: this may have been on a prior version, it IS possible to finish first depending on what settings/laps the game is set for] Also there are MAJOR differences between playing the twin version vs the deluxe version ======================================= 1 the car AI is much easier for the deluxe version 2 the maximum speed is slightly slower (5mph) in the deluxe version 3 the car patterns are different in the deluxe version due to these differences, if you practice on the harder twin version, you will find the deluxe version much easier to play... although the lap times are mostly comparable.. you will have to deal with more lap traffic in the deluxe version. the basic strategies for the turns is about the same.. although you will have to adjust for the traffic on the first lap, which is usually your fastest one. iii) Short race (4 laps) ------------------------------------ NOTE : ALL TIMES INCLUDE +3 Secs DUE TO ROLLING START TIMER ------------------------------------ Times ------- Finishing Times : 2'28'241 by GRP Finishing Position in race : 1st Fastest Lap : 0'35'200 Average Lap Times to finish : 38-40 seconds Average Position needed to finish 1st : (for normal settings) ========================================= After 1 Lap - 17th 2 Laps - 9th 3 Laps - 1st If you come in first : you get to see the Victory Lap and then the credits roll by on the TWIN version of the machine. On the deluxe version, it just goes to the name entry screen. iv) basic Course Analysis ---------------------- Start : This is the only checkpoint on this course. AUTOMATIC - Jam on the accelerator and peel out, carefully avoiding all cars around you. MANUAL - same as above, and also note that you already start in 6th gear, so don't worry about shifting 1 area ----------------------- Straightaway 2 area ----------------------- Turn 1 - Medium Left - but no braking ! 3 area ----------------------- Short Straightaway 4 area ----------------------- Turn 2 - Medium Left - but no braking ! 5 area ----------------------- Straightaway 6 area ----------------------- Turn 3 - Medium Left - but no braking ! 7 area ----------------------- Short Straightaway 8 area ----------------------- Turn 4 - Medium Left - but no braking ! --------------------- That's it. Get a good first few laps in, and pass as many cars as possible, and get into first place by at least the 5th lap. You can make up lost time if you crash or slowdown later on, but it will much harder without the good early start. THERE IS TIRE WEAR. If you crash, or hit a lot of cars, you will not be able to maintain fullspeed throughout each lap. Also you will lose a lot of time if you pitstop, which will repair your car and tires. (This is assuming you do NOT use the turbo option). It's up to you to decide whether or not it is a better option for you to lose time, and then try to make up for it with a fixed car. Another thing that you will encounter is a lot of lap traffic throughout the race. Near the end you can use this to your advantage to continue drafting and gain valuable speed and time. The car patterns break up during the race, and it is not possible to pattern your movements over such a long race. So you need to be flexible and adapt to the car traffic as the race evolves. ========================================================== ======================================================================== d) Highland Track ---------------------------------- i) map --- -------------------------------------------------------------- | NOTE ALL MAPS ARE NOT TO SCALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | -------------------------------------------------------------- 6 Grassy Overhang /-----------\ 7 / \ Bridge 5 / | <- 8 | Mt. | \ H | 9 Walk-over----CP i | | g | Cliffs| l | 4 \ a | 10 \ n | Grandstands S-turn \ d | 1 Start / | 3 2 | 18 11 / / /-----|----- / \ /-/ \ \ 17 \ - \ \ \ P | \ \ i | \ 12 \ t | | \ Milk Signs - | - - - - - - -\ area | 13 \ | \ | 16 14 \ Brick Wall | | <- | | / | / \ / birds \ / \ / \-----/ 15 Tunnel ii) ---------------------------------- Description : This fictious course is very scenic and has a lot of trademark Sega symbols in it, bridges, mountains, birds, and signs are everywhere. approach to come in first
---------------------------------------
Again, for the course of 17 laps
you need to be consistent within
about 1-3 secs each lap.

The car tire wear is very critical
and will cause you to slip and slide
during turns you normally make near
the last five laps.

Also, the top 7 cars are VERY AGGRESSIVE,
and will bump and hit you CONSTANTLY, if you
are near them, and during turns. They will
do this at the beginning. The sharp S-TURN,
and during the hard left turn near the
start. Another problem point is the
turn right before you enter the tunnel,
if you don't slowdown or brake, there
is a chance of running into it and
crashing.

Even if you are ahead of the other
cars, the top cars will always be right
next to you or behind you, ready to hit
you and cause you to lose your place
or your position.

I haven't tried using the pitstop yet,
due to the loss of time during the
race. But i think it might be helpful,
the key is to decide which lap to do it.
If you do it too late, you will never
be able to make up the 5-10 seconds.

I'm thinking that about near the halfway
point, around the 9th lap would be the
best time. That way you will be finishing
with a car in fixed condition and a good
car grip. Even if you don't have any
crashes, your tires will still wear out.
You can finish the race like this by
adjusting the approach during turns,
but you will be losing 3-5 seconds
per laps at times.

As it turns out, i was able to place
1st without a pitstop, but you have
to drive very carefully, and at the
most only have a few partial crashes,
otherwise you will not be able to
control the car in the last few laps.

approach to come in first
---------------------------------------
Again, for the course of 15 laps
you need to be consistent within
about 1-3 secs each lap.

I was able to finish first barely
once, but i did make a pitstop on
the 8th lap.

The other cars are VERY aggressive,
and with these tight turns, the
cars 1-6 will bump and hit you
constantly even if you try to
avoid them!

you will have to get ahead early,
and make up time during the
straightaways, and s-turns.

it will be hard to get to the end
and stay in front, but if you
can maintain decent lap times,
and only crash a few times,
you will be able to finish in
the top 3.

===============================end of courses===============================

4 Laptimes, and youtube links
==============================

When you finish a race,
the game tracks the top 10 times ranked.

It saves your rank, your time, and which transmission was used.

Depending on what position you finished you get:
================================================
4th-10th place - silver cup
3rd place - bronze trophy
2nd place - silver trophy
1st place - gold trophy

Also, when you finish 1st, you get some text,
and a black and white montage of your race
on that course.
==============================================

In the world of racing
legends are few and far
between. Those who
do reach such legen-
dary status do so by
constantly striving to
better themselves and
their machines-setting
record after record,
winning race after
race. More impor-
tantly, they inspire
the fans and the other
drivers with their
dedication to excel-
lence.

Now, we take great
pleasure in welcoming
yet another racer to
the Indy Racing Hall of
Fame.

6) Thanks and tips/tricks
   --------------

Tricks : Thanx to Michow@unixg.ubc.ca (Micheal Chow) for 1,2,3

1)Play as pace car: Hold down start and the brake pedal just after you
select your transmission (just before the "Start your engine" message)

2)Play with drones as pace cars: Hold shift lever on "up" and hold down
brake pedal like above.

3)Reverse view: while playing, press start and a view button for the
reverse angle. Kind of tough to use while playing, 'cause you can't see
what you're about to crash into.

4)far view : hold both view buttons down

5)car position : hold start and a view button
---------------------------------------------
Position Markers-- If you press the start button and either or both of
the zoom buttons simultaneously, the position numbers of the cars will
be displayed above each car. If you press “Start” + “Zoom In”, the
view will move in one increment and display the position numbers. If
you press “Start + Zoom Out”, the view will move out one increment
and the position numbers will be displayed. If you press “Start” and
both “Zoom” buttons simultaneously, the view will not change and the
position numbers will be displayed.

6) reverse track : hold a view button down when selecting a track

7) speed up selection for one player : rapidly press the view buttons
while waiting

8) You can alter your car's paint job by doing this:
-In nebula emulator: Press F2 to enter the Test Menu
-Go to "Game Assignments" by pressing F1 until the cursor reaches there, then
press? F2
-Change your car's color/number by changing "Cabinet ID" to any value between
1(default) and 8(I set mine to 2). Use F1 to move the cursor and press F2 to
change the ID of your "machine"

9) here's a hint for this game: Enter the pits with the 6th gear and come back
to track without changing gears. SHARAM! Now you have a Powered Up engine and
you can up to more than 420 Km/h!!!

10) mirror modes tracks

Mirror Mode--You actually have two different choices for this
selection. Mirror with responsive steering and mirror with power
steering.

Mirror Mode-- This code will allow you to drive the track with all the
turns reversed. First press and hold in the “Zoom In” (RED) button,
then press start to begin your game. If you do the code correctly, all
the tracks and text on the screen will be reversed.

Mirror Mode W/ Power Steering-- Doing the following will give you
the added pleasure of power steering. Press and hold in both “Zoom”
buttons, then press start to begin your game. If you do the code
correctly, the tracks and text on the screen will be reversed and the
steering wheel will turn freely.

11) reverse tracks

Driving the track in reverse-- This code, not to be confused with
the “Mirror Mode,” will allow you to drive your car around the track in
the opposite direction. Before you start a new game, push and hold the
gear selector to the downshift position (usually forward or toward the
screen).

12) power steering

Power Steering-- This code will turn off the responsive steering
wheel making it easier for you to steer.
Push and hold in the blue zoom button, then select the track you wish
to race on and the transmission type. After you select the transmission,
you can release the button.

Rumors
-------

hmmm, don't know any, wanna start some?

1) Sega Saturn version supposedly put on hold !!!!! due to complexity
and other priorities. (confirmed 5/96 - but it is going to be
   released sometime in 97!)

2) Lucky Japanese Saturn owners (or people who have converters- like
me !!!!!!!!!!! yes) get to play F-1 Live Racing, which is totally
different from INDY 500, but is just as good in some ways, 6 tracks
time trials, and LIVE ANNOUNCER (japanese) with video window to show race
progress !!! maybe this will come out in america.

(confirmed : released by virgin, it will come out in 6/96 or 7/96)

what does this have to do with anything? don't know, well if you like
racing, and have a saturn, GET THIS (and a converter) its GREAT !!!!!!

3) more racing rumors , MANX T.T should come out for the Saturn , this should
blow away HANG ON GP '95 (not really that bad, except for sound)

(confirmed : manx should be released 3rd quarter 96)

4) more racing news : DAYTONA 2 in the arcades, DAYTONA REMIX for Saturn later
   in '96.

(confirmed : both should be out 3/4th quarter 96)

5) Link cable for Saturn games, maybe for Racing Games????????????????

------------------------------------------------

7) Playing the game via an emulator
===================================
unfortunately, unless you own the arcade machine,
there was no way to play this game for a long time..

SEGA has released some racing games for many of the
consoles, and some have been ported to other systems.

however, this game is not one of them..

now, thanks to modern day computers, we can play arcade games on
most decent computers.. to play this game (and most model 2 ones).
you will need a windows computer with a p4,or better processor, and
windows directx with an accelerator.
===================================================================
1) do a search for m2 or nebula Model 2 emulator (get it)
2) do a search for the indy 500 roms (get them)
(sorry can't put links or help you out here)

3) install and configure the nebula emulator
v1.0 is the latest, but if you have issues, you
can run v0.9

this will support your controller or wheel to play,
play can be done with keyboard only, but will be
very difficult to fine tune

4) once you have everything in place, select either
the twin/deluxe version to play!

5) if you want to change the settings, go into
service mode (F2) and adjust to likings..settings
are detailed in section 4 above..

ENJOY PLAYING THE GAME,
set some record times, and post them
on youtube!
