Introduction | ------------------- Either you're reading this just to see what's in this FAQ, or you actually do need a pointer or two for this game. I'm glad to have your company regardless! I have to say only a few days before starting to write this guide, I had never even heard of this game. The only reason I had played this was because, as some of you might know, I take screenshots for GameFAQs. I was taking pictures for the completion project for some of the various systems, and I came across two versions of Badlands for the arcade. Well, I was able to do one of the versions just fine. The other version wasn't supported by the emulator I was using. After doing some research, I was able to find an emulator that was able to play it. The emulator came with a few games, one of them being Road Blaster! So lo and behold, I played the game, only intending to do pictures for it, but there was something about it that just blew me away. After completing the game, I decided that since there wasn't a FAQ for it, I would go and write one. Updates | -------------- 1.00 - It's the first release of the FAQ! No updates yet! 1.01 - Fixed the completion date on top and the copyright on the bottom...Meh.. 1.10 - Got an email from Mike Penance saying that the names he used in his guide were taken out of the booklet for the Sega CD version. He suggested I use those names as well. Thanks Mike! ------------------------- | 3. About search codes | ------------------------- I'm sure you people know how to use search codes, right? You press Ctrl + F if you're using a PC, and I think Command + F if you're using a mac. You can then type in one of those little codes up above to reach a certain area. So for example, if you wanted to skip right to the fourth level of the quick walkthrough section, you would type in 7.4 into the search box. How easy was that!? ----------------------------------- | 4. What is this game all about? | ----------------------------------- Well, according to Wikipedia: "Road Blaster is a 1985 interactive movie arcade game developed and published by Data East, with the help from Toei Animation in illustrating the animation. After Data East became defunct due to their bankruptcy back in 2003, G-Mode bought the intellectual rights to the arcade game as well as most other Data East games and licenses them globally. The player assumes the role of a vigilante who drives a customized sports car in order to bring the biker gang responsible for his wife's death to justice. As with other laserdisc-based arcade games from the same time, the gameplay consists of on-screen instructions overlaid over pre-recorded animated footage. The player enters a series of high-speed chases in which they must squeeze between trucks, fend off the gang members, perform dangerous stunts, commit acts of vehicular homicide, and narrowly escapes death before facing off against the gang's female leader. The player controls the cross-hair to steer their car toward the correct directions according to the green arrows flashing and beeping beside it, while controlling the gas pedal, brake and booster whenever they light up." I think that sums it up rather well. ******************************** * Arcade / Sega CD differences * ******************************** For all intents and purposes, there are a few big differences in the game. For one, the graphics are slightly different. Both look good though, so no worries there. The biggest differences has to be the fact that you have to aim when using the turbo button and slamming into a car in the arcade version, while you don't have to aim in the Sega CD version. At least I'm pretty sure there are less... If you want to play the Sega CD version and need a guide to use, you might consider using the guide by MikePenance: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/segacd/file/587988/56622 I would have modeled my guide after his, but due to certain things you have to do in this game compared to the Sega CD one, I feel that the way I wrote it makes more sense. (The short walkthrough at least) As a final note: There seems to be two distinct versions of this game. One is the arcade version with the crosshairs in it, and the others that don't seem to have them in. I talk about the arcade and Sega CD versions of the game since those two are the only ones I've played. Judging from videos I've seen showing off the other versions, it's safe to say the rest are like the Sega CD version. *********************************** * How this guide is going to work * *********************************** Simple enough.... There are two versions of the walkthrough: One is detailed, the other is to the point. The detailed walkthrough will tell the story of the game as directions are given to you. Think of this walkthrough as a story of sorts. As the scenes play out (while I try horridly to describe them), I'll tell you when you need to brake, step on the gas, turn, etc. I'll also be posting links to the pictures I have taken for the game which you can find in the image section. The other walkthrough, which I have dubbed "The short walkthrough" will just be a list of movements and when to use the brake and turbo buttons. When there's a point where you have to aim the crosshair at something, that'll be listed as well. One little point of interest I feel compelled to tell you is that there are checkpoints in the game, so if you happen to lose a life, you won't start right back of the beginning of the stage (Unless you didn't reach that first checkpoint...) There are also some points where you start from a checkpoint and the next action you would need to do is gone. A good example of this is in the last stage. There's a bus that shows up soon after starting over from a certain checkpoint, but if you start from there, you don't have to input the command. So just watch out for those. ***************** *****WARNING***** ***************** Keep in mind for the short walkthrough that it's just the commands listed, and not the timing for them. So beware, because sometimes when driving around you may have to go left then right rather quickly without much time in-between commands. ***************** *****WARNING***** ***************** --------------- | 5. Controls | --------------- The controls for this game are really simple. Essentially there are 3 main things you can do: Move, speed up, and slow down. Obviously you won't have to worry about the 1P or 2P button, you know what those do... Moving around in this game is real simple. You really don't have control of the car. You'll be given queues when you need to go left or right. There is no up or down in this game. (After all, this is a normal car, not one of those flying ones from Back to the Future II.) The turbo button is used to speed up. Just like going left or right, you'll know when you'll have to hold down the turbo button. Another thing to go along with the turbo button is the crosshair you see on the screen. It's only real purpose is to aim at the bad guys when holding down turbo. It can only go left or right. The brake button is to slow down or come to a halt. Just like the other commands, you'll be giving a queue when you need to slam on the brakes. If you follow the commands on the screen, you'll do just fine! ----------------------------------------- | 6. Let's not smash into wrecked car... -LEFT- This place sure has a lot of rock walls...Let's not scratch the paint... -RIGHT- Oh look, it's that rolling rock from Indiana Jones! While this guide is for the arcade version of Road Blaster, I just love the
opening song for the Sega CD version, Road Avenger.  I figured since I did
post my picture slideshow showcasing both versions which includes the Sega CD
opening, I would include the lyrics here:
