Final word and credits =============== 2. Introduction =============== Game Title: Kidou Senshi Gundam - Renpou VS Zeon(Zion) (Mobile Suit Gundam - Federation VS The Pricipality of Zeon) FAQ version: 1.0 Game platform: Arcade, PS2 FAQ author: Kami Kaze no Kami Email address: epcy_kami@hotmail.com Thank you to Bandai (with co-operation with Capcom), you have finally made a Gundam game for the arcade. The old version of Renpou vs Zeon (RvsZ ver1.5) was released in 2000. The new DX version is released in around September 2001, which is the version this FAQ referring to. ============ 3. Copyright ============ The anime "Kidou Senshi Gundam" series is copyrighted of Bandai The game "Mobile Suit Gundam - Renpou VS Zeon (DX)" is copyrighted of Bandai and Capcom. Also, this FAQ is copyrighted to me (Eric, Kami Kaze no Kami) ========================= 4. MS-14, MS-14S and Char ========================= If you had watched the anime, you might know that MS-14 Gelgoog is a Zeon mass production MS type (well, not really "mass production" since there are not too many). This MS-14 is being made because Zeon wants to use it to regain the advantage, and they hope that this MS would have the ability to fight Gundam. Thanks to Amuro, a wonderful (as well as terrible, crazy etc) Renpou pilot who never lose in battles (you have to believe me, if not, watch Gundam UC0079 one year war and see the power this New Type has). Back to Gelgoog, after they're being made, Char picked one of them and started to modify it (and add a cool "antenna" thing above the skull). Base on the anime, Gelgoog use the "hit and run" tactic in the battle (hmm...it's somehow a fact in the game, too) Char can move much faster as other MS, some said his MS has 3x horsepower. But I think the reason is because whenever he defeated the enemy's MS, he just kicked on the defeated MS before it exploded and bounced himself away for a more powerful acceleration to approach another enemy. He has a famous name "The Red Comet", it's the time when he was still riding the red Zaku II, whenever Char is leading a legion for a battle, he's always the first one to arrive the battlefield (well, 3x speed). And remember, his MS colour is light red, so people often see a red star oncoming from the sky, that's how the name "The Red Comet" come from. ========================== 5. Concept of the Movement ========================== On the control panel, you have a direction stick along with 4 buttons with a start button. Direction stick: You can use the stick to move your MS around. "Move" is divided into 3 categories: Walk, Dash and Jump (control attitude in space) Walk: In order to move your MS in a steady speed (that is, walk), simply push and hold the direction you want. There are 8 ways you can move your MS for walking. LF F RF \ | / L - N - R / | \ LB B RB Dash: In order to do a quick step (that is, dash), tap the same direction twice. Unlike walk, there are only 4 ways you can dash. And, you need to use a portion of your booster gauge to dash. F | L - N - R | B For jumping and controlling attitude, it will be descibed in later section. Buttons: Beside the stick, you have 4 buttons from left to right and a start button somewhere on the panel. >From left to right, 1) Search / Target Simply tap the button and search your enemies. In order to switch target, just keep tapping it until you are locking on the target you want. 2) Primary Attack (often refer as range weapon) This button enable you to use your primary weapon for your unit. 3) Melee Attack This button enable you to use your melee weapon for your unit. 4) Booster (control attitude either on ground stages or in space stages) On the ground: Press and hold this button enable you to boost up into the air, you can use the same movement method as on the ground with the direction stick. You can tap the button in order to stay at an attitude you want. You are forced to land if your booster gauge is emptied. In the space: Press and hold this button enable you to move vertically upward (just keep in mind that the booster boost directly downward). Press the booster along with the direction stick to move your MS. There are some special movement for every MS (oh well, some don't): Button 2 + Button 3: Also known as Secondary weapon, press these 2 buttons allow you to use the secondary weapon. Button 3 + Button 4: Also known as sudden melee attack, press these 2 buttons allow you to use the sudden melee attack. Button 2 + Button 4: Reloading, for some machine gun MS in Renpou side, you can press these 2 buttons whenever you want to reload your machine gun. *Only work with Zock or any MS armed with a Cannon type weapon: Hold down Button 1 and then use primary weapon (button 2): This allow your MS goes into "sniper mode", your MS will shoot much faster and vertically upward (except for Zock) and land the cannons on the target like meteors. Start button: Use this button to communicate with your partner. If your partner is human, press the button and let your partner know your current status. If your partner is CPU, press the button to give simple command to your partner. These commands are: Standard Shooting Combating Backup (attack the same target as yours) Evade ================================ 6. Data about MS-14S in the game ================================ MS-14S Char Gelgoog data: Cost: 2.5 stars Health Point: 480 Armor: C 1st weapon: Laser beam rifle with 10 shots. Constantly reload with a rate of 10 seconds per shot. Melee weapon: Twin beam naginata 2nd weapon: Naginata spin shield ================================= 7. Primary Weapon(Primary Attack) ================================= Char Gelgoog is armed with a Laser Beam Rifle, the average damage is about 120. It does the same damage as Gundam's beam rifle, the most powerful beam rifle in the game. Beam (and machine gun bullet) has the fastest weapon travelling speed in the game. Like most of the beam weapon in the game, it can penetrate any MS hit in close to mid range. If your timing is right, it's possible to hit two targets with one shot (as well as your partner...) The main disadvantage of the beam rifle is that the reloading time is extremely long, it's about 10 seconds per shot (beam is the slowest recharging weapon). Please use your ammo wisely, base on the fact that Gelgoog doesn't have another range weapon. And, the shooting patch of the beam is almost a straight line (with some homing ability), unlike cannon, which flys at a projectile arc. So basically, the beam cannot go through any building, big MA or any obstacle on the battle field. =============================================== 8. Melee Weapon(Melee Attack)/ Secondary Weapon =============================================== Melee Weapon Gelgoog has a good advantage for a close range game. Especially Char Gelgoog, he has a much higher frequency to pull out his blade than any other MS (except Gyan) C Gelgoog has the fastest "draw the blade" time among all MS in the game, even Gundam is slightly slower than him (again, except Gyan). And, the twin beam naginata has a wider striking angle than any other one-bladed-sabres. The damage of C Gelgoog's melee is the same as most MS. Each normal hit does around 80-120 damage. There are many ways a MS can melee (except some MS/MA such as Guntank, Zeong...) 1. Ground melee 2. Dash melee 3. Ground sudden melee/Dash sudden melee 4. Air melee + follow up on the ground 5. Air dash melee 6. Stand up attack Char Gelgoog has these 6 ways to melee. 1. Ground melee C Gelgoog makes a homing dash for short distance toward the enemy, he draws out the blade while dashing if it's not out already. After he approachs to the enemy, he does a simple 1,2,3 slash, the enemy falls on the ground after the 3rd hit. All 3 hits are horizontal slashes, so the striking area is quite wide. 2. Dash melee Char Gelgoog's dash melee has 2 versions: The first version is a 2-hit ground dash melee. C Gelgoog does a horizontal slash and a blade spin. The blade spin knocks the enemy 9 km away, but it doe NOT guarantee. The second version is a 3-hit space dash melee. C Gelgoog does a horizontal slash, another horizontal slash and a shoryuken blade uppercut to knock the enemy away. 3. Ground sudden melee/Dash sudden melee C Gelgoog draws out the blade beside the hip and does a quick body twist with the blade. The attack comes out quite slow, it does not provide a good range and it does not have homing ability (but the twisting pose is cool). 4. Air melee + follow up on the ground If you press the melee button while approaching the enemy from the air, he will draw out the blade and do a pretty fast homing dash onto the enemy. He does a vertical slash on the enemy's shoulder, if you keep pressing the melee, he would do another 2 slashes as the follow up attack. The first one hits enemy's chest, the next one hits enemy's leg and knocks him down. 5. Air dash melee C Gelgoog has two kinds of "Air dash melee", the first one is dashing forward, the second one is dashing any direction other than forward. Forward air dash melee: This move is quite useful (and cool) for C Gelgoog. C Gelgoog will do a "flying kick" onto the enemy, the move has a good homing ability and considerable range. If C Gelgoog is not holding the blade, then he would bounce back for a distance after the flying kick hit the enemy. * If C Gelgoog is holding the blade, then he could do a melee combo. Flying kick -> vertical slash (in the air) -> low slash (follow up on ground). (This is the point for this "flying kick" move, quite useful and...cool) Any direction other than forward: (Same as "Air melee + follow up on the ground") If you press the melee button while approaching the enemy from the air, he will draw out the blade and do a pretty fast homing dash onto the enemy. He does a vertical slash on the enemy's shoulder, if you keep pressing the melee, he would do another 2 slashes as the follow up attack. The first one hits enemy's chest, the next one hits enemy's leg and knocks him down. 6. Stand up attack C Gelgoog will do this slash in 2 conditions. The first one is, of course, he is about to stand up. And the second one is that the enemy has to be close to him while he's standing up. Keep pressing the melee button while he's about to stand up. C Gelgoog will spin the blade like "raging" and then do a powerful uppcut which hit the enemy into the air (a bit higher than a MS). While the enemy is in the air, it's still a "red target", so you can keep slashing when the enemy is falling down (you have to have a good timing). Although this move is powerful, it's not useful because the conditions are not easy to acquire and this slash is not fast. Secondary Weapon If you press primary weapon and melee buttons at the same time, C Gelgoog would do a sword spinning in front of him. The beam on both sides of his blade form a spinning shield. But he can only block something which come from the front of him, and he cannot move while he's spinning the blade. And the spinning last for around 3 seconds. And, it seems that C Gelgoog's hands are vulnerable while he's spinning the blade (that is, the center part of the spinning shield) Things that can be blocked by the spinning shield (blade): (The attack must hit the blade part of the shield. That is, the attack comes from the front but with an angle) Machine gun's bullet Beam ammo Cannons Melee attack (from an angle, like ground melee) Things that can NOT be blocked by the spinning shield: Melee attack hit the center position (ie Hyper Hammer) Explosive weapon (ie Bazooka) Dom's flashing beam So, basically this secondary weapon is not useful because it's limited blocking ability. But, somehow it's useful against human player in melee combat (if the opponent is going to do the ground melee), spin the blade to parry your enemy away and slash him. ========== 9. Tactics ========== C Gelgoog vs Gundam: Gundam RX-78 is the best MS in the game (here I mean the ability of the MS). Char Gelgoog is the most similar MS compared with Gundam, so if you know how to use Gundam, then it shouldn't be a problem for using C Gelgoog. But there are many things that Gundam can do but C Gelgoog cannot. But C Gelgoog has a few advantage. - His walking speed is faster than Gundam. - His "draw the blade out" time is faster than Gundam. (the fastest except Gyan) - He can do a vertical 90 degree downward shot which Gundam cannot do. - His shield is on his back, pretty useful for defending your back. (While Gundam's shield is for defending his front side) Range battle (on ground stages): Keep in mind that your beam rifle's reload time is slow, so you don't want to waste any ammo. You want to land as many ammo as you can on the target since Renpou's MS have higher HP in average. So your magazine usually has 1-2 shots when there is only 1 enemy left to win (in case of you are still using the same MS). Every MS has lag time after an action. Long lagging: hit by beam weapon, "stop and shot", miss a slash etc Short lagging: after a dash, landing from the air etc Catch the lag of your enemies. Try to fire your rifle without stopping at one spot. Your walking path shouldn't exceed 90 degree with the direction of your enemy. So you can do "walking shot" action, you don't want to have lag for your enemy to shoot you. And, try to lurk your enemy to shoot you from a weird angle, so your enemy has to "stop and shot". And then you can shoot your enemy. Melee battle: As mentioned above, C Gelgoog has his "draw the blade out time" advantage. But, it's fact that C Gelgoog doesn't have high HP and good armor. So, it's still a risk to play melee battle. To play close with your enemy, first of all you have to ensure that there's no abush lying around, you don't want someone disturb you when you're slashing your enemy. Whenever you find the other enemy is also locking on you, move back from both and go for a range battle instead of melee battle. Since you're basically dead if you're trapped in the "L" or "X" attack format (especially if one of your enemies is close to you) Basically if 2 MS are close together, anyone who explodes a lag time is danger (the risk is proportional to the distance between both MS). If you have a long lag time, you are going to be hit even your enemy is not too close. For a short lag time, you still have a chance to be hit by your enemy's range weapon if he can predict your move. You have to know the homing ability of your enemy. If your enemy has a powerful homing dash, he might surpise you with an attack (such as Gundam). "L" attack format: X = enemy O = you X | | X- - - O "X" attack format: X = enemy O = you X X \ / \ / O Approaching the enemy (on ground stages): There are 2 ways to approach the enemy, air or ground, depends on which MS your enemy is (and their weapon). Normally I don't recommend people to approach by the air because you need to be careful while you're approaching to your enemy. If you really want to do so, then you have to know the consuming of the turbo booster. You need to have about 1/3 of the booster gauge left after you've approached your enemy, you can do many things with that 1/3 booster. With his good homing ability, you can quickly decide to melee or shot if your enemy shows his lag. In case of you don't think it's a right time to attack, then please, don't land on ground right away, you have to 1)find a cover or 2) shift your landing place. Attacks that I recommend for air battle: Blade out air dash melee (flying kick + follow up) Shot (always a goog attack) It is not hard to approach your enemy on ground, especially fighting CPU. Char Gelgoog just has to walk for dodging most of the range weapon (I don't see why many people keep dashing to dodge the bullets from damn far away). The "Walking Shot" (Keep walking, the CPU shoots, then you shoot. Most of the time you will hit your enemy without trading the ammo each other). Maybe it's the setting of the game, it seems that a shot from a human player has much higher accuracy then a shot from CPU. So, the "Walking Shot" method usually doesn't work for versus human players. Then how can you hit your enemy? Lag time. Always attack your enemy's lag time, otherwise your enemy would do that on you. Keep in mind that you're not necessary to catch a long lagging time, you can obtain a clean hit even your enemy has a short lagging time. It's all about timing. Out of ammo? - Take out your blade and start circling around your enemy. - The blade is only for defending yourself. (What I mean is use it to attack only if someone wants to do a melee to you) - Wait for your magazine has at least 2 shots (You need to have a couple of shots to back yourself up) Space battles: (Update soon) ============================================ 10. MS which is good to co-op with C Gelgoog ============================================ 1. Zock His firepower is the best thing to back C Gelgoog up while C Gelgoog is out of ammo. But, be aware that Zock has to fight with different target from C Gelgoog, because Zock's 4 particle beam would accidentally hit C Gelgoog. 2. Zaku II / C Zaku II Many new players underestimate the ability of Zaku II series. But these warriors are just essential for winning if they're cooperated with Char Gelgoog. 3. Guntank (with capture mode) This supportive MS has good armor and firepower with low cost. And its accuracy is slightly better than Zock. 4. GM / Land GM (with capture mode) These 2 MS have a good melee potiential, especially GM. And, GM can do a good job in space battle. He got 12 shots for his beam rifle, so he is good for backing up. ========================== 11. Final word and credits ========================== The winning key of this game is: "Be Patient", this can save your game as many time as you play. And my English grammar sucks, so my faq might contain many error English usage. Before the end of this FAQ, I would like to thank some people. Goodboy: Not much to say to you. You are the first one to finish the game with me. Someday...we will use twin old Zaku to take twin Gundam out. Char (NPC): Thanks for the information from the message board. Bandai/Sunrise: For making Gundam...
