Still to Come: More corrections More hit numbers I don’t know how many more times I’ll update this FAQ but it will be updated a couple more times. 2. Reasons for the FAQ This game has been out for nearly eleven months now. As time goes on, more and more people are interested in other peoples scores. This FAQ will hopefully get other people to improve on their scores. These ideas come from me, but enormous thanks has to be given to Mark Kim (Vesther Fauranscy). Remember, this is a scoring FAQ. Quick Tips Any time you see a red sighting on the screen, take your foot off the petal. There is no other basic to explain this. While we are playing for score here, you can’t get a high score if you keep getting hit all the time. If you don’t duck in time, you are bound to get hit. However, don’t stay in hiding for too long or your timing will be completely messed up and you could walk right into a hit. Always shoot each enemy three times in the head. Head shots always count more to the score and are very important if trying to score big in this game. Even though it takes one shot for an enemy to go down (with the exception of armored soldiers on the truck in stage 1-1), you can keep shooting the enemy for more hits to your hit streak. The faster you clear the stage, the higher your time bonus is at the end of the level. This means more points for you. Don’t spend minutes hiding behind objects because you’re afraid an enemy will hit you. How in the world do you expect to get better by doing that? If you are about to die in the game, put the money in the machine ahead of time. In other words, if you have one life left and you’re at stage 1-1, chances are pretty bad that you’re going to beat the game on one credit. Put extra money in so that your time bonus is higher because it does count against you. Hopefully, you’ll be playing with somebody you know if you’re playing a Link game. Communication is extremely important on this game in terms of which enemies to hit It is not easy to play with a stranger especially when he is a rookie at the game. Remember, unlike House of the Dead 2, more enemies DO NOT APPEAR when two people are playing. Regarding the link game, if any person says NO to continue when the continue screen is up, that person’s score goes straight down to 0. This could mean going from 500,000 to 300,000. If you can, don’t let anybody say NO to continue even if they feel like it. Any time your hit streak reaches ten, you get a 500 point bonus. When it reaches twenty, you get a 1000 point bonus. The highest bonus a person can get is 5,000 while the highest hit streak possible is 99. This is more important than the hit streak itself. There are times that I have seen myself with a 50 hit combo and get only 500 points. Any reason for this? The hit combo meter will disappear after approximately one and a half seconds or a couple of missed shots. It disappears faster with the more missed shots you fire at it. Therefore, not only is the accuracy important in getting the higher score but the speed helps as well. (Thanks Yes Man for making sure I got this information in the FAQ) Don’t hit any good guys in the game (That sounds really obvious doesn’t it?) While the penalty is not as severe as in House of the Dead or Virtua Cop, you do lose 1,000 points for hitting your partner and 5,000 points for hitting Christy at the end of the game. Fortunately, you don’t lose any life if you do hit allies, but remember, we are playing for score now. If you’re playing a SOLO mission, the orange men in the game are paths to take. If you shoot the orange guy on the left, you’ll be taking Keith’s path while the guy on the right will give you Robert’s path. It’s important that you get familiar with either Keith’s path or Robert’s path. The better you are with a certain character, the higher the score will be. Every time you see a yellow guy on the screen, SHOOT HIM! Each one is worth 5,000 points. They are usually only on the screen for only a second so be fast. 4. Legends and useful information in the FAQ The FAQ tries to detail each important scene as much as possible. Before each scene you will see a hit number showing how many hits I have gotten on that particular scene. Some of these are approximations, but they are pretty close to the actual number. Also at the end of the stage, you will see a score showing the number of points in both the SOLO mission and the LINK mission. There will also be a final score that I will show of the walkthrough. If you add all these up, they will NOT total the final score. It’s like one of those days where you score a really high number on one stage and then a really pathetic number on another stage (120,000 on stage 1-1 followed by 230,000 on stage 1-2) And now onto the game. 5. Stage I Stage 1-1 First Scene - 28 Hits Hit the boss first, but then hit the bottles on the shelf. Accuracy is extremely essential in this part in the game. Shoot the other guys like you normally would. SOLO NOTE: While it’s true the orange guy on the left gives you Keith’s path, that is not true for the first scene. For some reason, you have to hit the guy on the right for Keith’s path and the guy on the left for Robert’s path. This is one of the glitches I’ve seen. The other will be listed later on (around 22 for the second,17 for the third and 24 for the fourth) Second scene - 20 hits There are some regular enemies, but nothing to really worry about. Keep shooting each enemy three times in the head and be fast with your shots. Third scene - 15 hits I think that hit number should be higher. However, nothing special here except good accuracy and quick speed. Fourth scene - 24 hits This is probably your first real threat in terms of enemies. Keep shooting them, but the enemies here are definitely going to hit you if you’re not careful. Fifth scene - 18 hits Do not shoot the tank right away. Shoot the enemies first. There are about five of them. Then hit the tank for 10,000 points. Sixth scene - 25 hits Don’t forget the bonus man. He appears after the guys on the left get hit first. Try hitting the guys on the right and then aim for the guys on the left. Seventh scene - 28 hits The two characters take separate paths at this point. The 28 hits comes from Robert’s path. Nothing new here except keep hitting the enemies in the head and shoot quickly. Final scene - 30 hits This is not easy to do. Shoot the boss as many times as you can. When you see him flinch, shoot the enemies. IT IS possible to link the combo so that you hit the armored soldiers on the truck after hitting the regular enemies here. Unlike the regular enemies, the armored soldiers take two shots to destroy instead of one. You still have to shoot them repeatedly to make the hit counter go up, but make sure that the enemy goes down or you may get hit with a surprise attack. When the boss jumps back onto the truck, hit him ONCE. Then shoot the enemies until the scene ends. End of Stage 1-1 Score for the scene Solo: 191,000 Link: 195,000 Stage 1-2 First scene - 56 hits You could probably reach 70 hits here if your timing is good. The key here is to shoot each barrel ONCE. If you’re timing is good, when the last barrel gets hit, the enemies will appear. This is how the link combo gets higher. When the boss appears, fire as many shots as you can at him. SOLO NOTE: The boss will show up a total of four times in stage 1-2. Each time he does, hit his hat. If you do, you’ll go to a bonus scene where there are a ton of bonus men. You should easily rack up 95,000 points and possibly near 130,000. Also, unlike the other bonus men throughout the game, each time you hit a bonus man in the bonus scenes, you will score 5,000 points for EVERY SHOT that hits a bonus man. Second scene - Fourth scene (around 30 hits for the first one and 20 for the other two) For the rest of the stage, shoot the enemies like normal, but use the barrels to keep the hit counter going. If you see a barrel just sitting there, don’t shoot it immediately. Instead, wait until most of the enemies are gone, then shoot it. If your timing is good, you should be able to keep your hit counter going. Final scene - 99 hits If you’re Robert, have some fun here. Take the machine gun and shoot the tank IN THE MIDDLE! It is true that if you hit the tank’s weak point which is the gun, you will destroy the tank quicker. However, we are playing for score here. Keep shooting the tank in the middle and you should easily get 99 hits. Don’t forget to shoot the enemies around here as well as the guys inside the tank because they WILL hit you. Author’s Note 5-27-1999: I got shot at by the tank FOUR TIMES after I shot the guys inside the tank. I managed to dodge every one of them but I got NOTHING for my time bonus. My final score on that day stank as well. End of Stage 1-2 Score for the scene Solo: 230,000 Link: 220,000 Stage 1-3 First Scene - 22 hits When you see the boss, hit him repeatedly. There is also a bonus man here. Shoot him as soon as he appears. Keep shooting the enemies until you’re giving the WAIT sign. Second scene - 29 hits Shoot the guns on the boat until they completely fall off. Keep hitting the boat until the camera completely changes and you’re facing enemies instead of the boat. Rest of the Scene This is probably the one area of the game where linking hits is REALLY hard to do. Just be warned of a couple of sections. When you see the enemies in the water, a bonus man is nearby. He will be on the boat. Shoot the bonus man, THEN shoot the enemies in the sky. If they get too close to you, DUCK! After that, some enemies will try to get close to you and swipe you with their knife. Hit them quickly and it is possible to score a quick 5 hit combo if you can link it correctly. Anytime the boss shows up, hit him only once. He will flinch and all the other shots will be no good. Focus the other shots on the enemies on the boat. Really Strange Glitch This happened once in a LINK game and it has never happened again. My sister and I went through the area so fast that the boat slid off the screen. There were no enemies on the screen at all. There was absolutely no way I could get struck by an enemy. Unfortunately, both of us were getting hit BY AN INVISIBLE ENEMY! She lost two lives and I lost one. Then the boat appeared and the final scene (described below) was next and we finished the level. You’ll probably never see this, but if you do, take your foot off the petal and try to wait for the boat to come back. Final scene The boss will show up on the boat like before. Each time he shows up, hit him quickly but only one shot is necessary. After each shot he will flinch and duck. After three shots, he will die and the stage will end. End of stage 1-3 Score for the scene SOLO: 63,000 LINK: 75,000 Score at the end of stage 1 SOLO: 470,000 LINK: 501,000 6. Stage 2 Stage 2-1 First scene - 15 hits This is a hard area in the game, but there is nothing really new to report. Keep shooting the enemies like normal until WAIT appears on the screen. Second scene - 24 hits There are a couple of knife people jumping at you on Robert’s path. If you want maximum points, fire one shot when he is in the air and then quickly fire two shots at him on the ground. On Robert’s path, a bonus man will appear from behind the tree while on Keith’s path, a bonus man will run like mad across the screen. Make sure you get yours. Third scene - 18 hits Regular machine gun enemies. Just shoot them like you would shoot any other bad guys in the game. Fourth scene - 70 hits There is no way you can get 99 hits here. (at least I’ve never seen it happen.) Keep shooting the middle of the tank like always and duck the tree so that it doesn’t hit you. You’ll know when it’s coming by the danger sign. Fifth scene - 40 hits That’s right. 40 HITS! On Robert’s path anyway. Shoot the enemies like normal. This is a great scoring chance. Usually however, you can only get 40 hits on the SOLO mission. I usually get 27 on the LINK and it’s not because my partner it killing my enemies. Sixth scene - 18 hits Standard enemies. Nothing new to report. Seventh scene - 30 hits A platform can be shot for another 10,000 points. Make sure you take out the enemies FIRST. There are a lot of them. Robert should be able to see about 10 or 12 people around here. Final scene - 18 hits There are six enemies here and two barrels. If you are playing a LINK game, make sure you communicate real well here. Kill five enemies and then get ready to shoot the barrels. Shoot each barrel twice and then shoot both of them really fast so that your gun hits them both for 10,000 points (5,000 for each barrel). End of stage 2-1 Score for the scene SOLO: 180,000 LINK: 220,000 Stage 2-2 First scene - 30 hits Contrary to what most people have originally thought, the second bonus man DOES NOT show up whenever he feels like it. You do have to be fast though. Shoot the enemies on the train first as well as the guys on the right. Then shoot the guys on the left and the bonus man that comes out of the window of the left train. Then aim for the guys on the right again. The second bonus man comes out of a crate, REALLY fast. If your gun is fast enough, then there should be no reason why you can’t get both of them. Second scene- 24 hits It’s hard to put an estimate on this scene. Just keep shooting the enemies and watch the red sightings. Third scene - 20 hits Shoot the bonus men on the train. You have to be FAST. Then shoot the enemies like normal. SOLO NOTE: By shooting both bonus men on the train, you will be going to another bonus area where you can score another 65,000+ points. Fourth scene - 18 hits KEITH’S SCENE: Keith has the obnoxious problem with dodging the poles that come after him on the train. If you can, try to shoot as many enemies before ducking the poles. You need to get as many enemies out of the way so you can hit the bonus man at the end of the scene. This bonus man unlike the others can give you 10,000 points. (If you shoot if twice that is 10,500 if you shoot it three times. Why this is I have no idea.) ROBERT’S SCENE: Robert is on the train shooting enemies like he normally would. After the knife attacker, hit one more enemy, and then shoot the back of the train. Timing has to be fast right here. There is a bonus man in this area and he shows up for less than a second. Fifth scene - 38 hits Hit the enemies like normal and especially the bonus man. When the big gun appears, shoot at it like mad. When he fires a shot at you, duck (sounds obvious). However, another bonus man should appear right after the shot. Hit him, and then go back after the tank. Destroy it for 10,000 points. Final scene - 15 hits Not necessarily an easy area, but keep hitting the enemies like normal. Same old, same old. End of stage 2-2 Score for the scene SOLO: 200,000 LINK: 240,000 Stage 2-3 First scene - 31 to 48 hits If you’re Robert, don’t hesitate to get a few quick shots in before he starts pounding you with shots. If you’re Keith, you should be able to score an unbelievable amount of hits on this guy. Both guys can hit a bonus man each so make sure you get them. Any time the boss flinches, don’t shoot. You’ll waste shots. Shoot when he is ready to start pounding again. Second scene - 20 hits Keep pounding the boss as normal and stop shooting the gun when he flinches. Dodge his swings and his attempts to pound you into the ground. Keep going until the WAIT sign appears. Final scene - 20 hits Shoot the boss continuous dodging the red sightings when necessary. Nothing new here. Keep shooting until he dies. End of Stage 2-3 Score at the end of the scene SOLO: 62,000 LINK: 75,000 7. Stage 3 Stage 3-1 First scene - 20 hits Standard stuff here. Shoot the enemies until they die. That number is probably greater than 20 however. Second scene - 18 hits There is a bonus man in this area. He runs by fast and usually appears pretty early on Robert’s path. Not as early on Keith’s path however. Be fast with your shots. Third scene - 14 hits Same old enemies until you reach a blue guy who can occasionally get a lucky shot in. Shoot him quickly and be prepared to dispatch of another bonus man. Keep shooting until the cut-scene. Fourth scene - 33 hits Wild Dog is here. Shoot him first and then take out the enemies. When he jumps down and starts to run away, plug him with all the lead you’ve got. Keep shooting until he turns around. By now, more enemies will have shown up. DODGE ANY SIGHTINGS! Keep hitting them until they’re gone and then focus on Wild Dog again. Keep hitting him until WAIT appears on the screen. SOLO NOTE: To get to the third bonus path, shoot wild dog as many times as you possibly can. Any time he appears, shoot him. Be careful not to get hit because you won’t be getting in as many shots. I’m not sure of how many hits you need to get. Final scene - 24 hits Keep shooting Wild Dog dodging any shots he might take at you. However, when he flinches, that is when you shoot the enemies (unless they’re bonus men and then you take them out right away). This will increase the hit streak. Keep shooting until he runs away. End of Stage 3-1 Score at the end of the scene SOLO: 120,000 LINK: 160,000 Stage 3-2 Only scene - 31 hits There are no breaks at all in this scene. However, only fire one shot at either of the two bosses that appear. The other shots won’t count causing your hit streak to end. When Wild Dog does a jump kick at you, plug him with as many shots as you can. Duck when he gets close. Then get ready for the coolest part in the game. He will stand there for a second and throw a punch at you. If you hit the fist, you can score 5,000 and even 10,000 depending on how close he was to hitting you. When the helicopters come onto the screen, shoot them as many times as you can. Even when they are going down, never stop firing the gun until they are completely off the screen. When Ernesto grabs Christy, it is possible to shoot him right here. But each shot only gives you 100 points and if you hit Christy, you lose 5,000 points. It’s up to you. Fire a few more shots at Wild Dog and the scene ends. End of Stage 3-2 Score for the scene SOLO : 62,000 LINK : 78,000 Stage 3-3 First scene - 13 hits As always, keep hitting the enemies like you usually would. However, only one is needed to shoot Ernesto. If you fire more than one, you risk the chance of hitting Christy and losing 5,000 points. Keep hitting the enemies until the screen says WAIT. Second scene - 7 hits With the exception of two soldiers, the only enemy here is Ernesto. Continue to fire one shot at him while avoiding Christy at all costs. Continue until the cut scene appears. Third scene - 99 hits Have some fun here. While dodging the beams and the missiles, keep shooting the gun. Don’t shoot Ernesto here because that will make the scene go faster and in the long run, you won’t be able to get as many shots off. Fourth scene - 67 hits Same as before. Keep shooting the satellite until the scene says WAIT. Shooting Ernesto speeds up the scene and you shouldn’t do that. Final scene - 87 hits This is probably only possible from Keith’s side. There is one point where a barrage of missiles just gets shot at you. If you are feeling REALLY lucky, you can fire a shot in between each one. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, this is without a doubt, the hardest part of the entire game. When Ernesto takes his gun and starts shooting at you, dodge the shot and hit him to end the game. IMPORTANT NOTE: When playing the LINK game, if a player dies when fighting Ernesto, and Ernesto dies BEFORE the other player gets a chance to continue, the score for him will be wiped out. For example, if the continue screen appears and Ernesto dies, the score for the player that had the continue screen is completely destroyed. If one player has one life remaining and the other person has three lives, then let the other person fight Ernesto. The person with one life should just hide. End of Game Score for the scene SOLO : 220,000 LINK : 270,000 8. Final Scores At the Ocean City Mall on 94th Street in Boardwalk Fun, I got 1,250,100 points even though I hit only ONE bonus path. So sooner or later that number is going to jump. In the LINK mode, the highest score we’ve gotten is 1,566,680 or something like that. We did it at Marty’s Playland in Ocean City MD. Memo to all arcade operators. STOP RESETING THE HIGH SCORES!!! Sorry, but I got really furious when I saw the arcade reset the score. 9. Credits and Thanks Mark Kim.
