******************************************************************** * WWF Superstars FAQ v3.0 * * Technos Japan 1989 * * Format: CoinOp, Genre: Wrestling, Players: 1-2 * ******************************************************************** From: black2 -> black2@orinoco.demon.co.uk 10:38 21/01/99 This is my first attempt at a FAQ, so not only have I chosen an easy one, I know EVERYTHING about this game. Well, apart from how the computer can conveniently duck clotheslines and you can't. And what DiBiase's Bizarre Pseudo-Back Body Drop move is. Apart from that, everything. (Except how to genuinely like The Honky Tonk Man). * SECTION 1 - Legend * U = Up D = Down L = Left R = Right P = Punch K = Kick The numbers following the moves are damage caused. Wrestlers' finishers are in BLOCK CAPS. Moves marked <= *R are reversals - continuous button-pummeling can earn you a reversal. Moves marked <= *U are unreversable - there is no danger of that jerking back and forth business. * SECTION 2 - The Characters and Moves * RANDY "MACHO MAN" SAVAGE "Oooh yeah, top of the line every time - dig it?" Yes, before all that Macho King debacle, the Macho Man terrorised the WWF with high-flying prowess and all-round Savagery. Beware of the ropes when performing the Suplex. Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Swinging Clothesline = P (2) High Knee = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: Suplex = P (3) Atomic Drop = K (3) <= *R Irish Whip = K Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) Dropkick = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) Elbow Drop = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Dropkick = P/K (1) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone FLYING ELBOW SMASH = P/K (3) HULK HOGAN "Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on YOU?!" Answer: Yawn. The '80s sensation dominated wrestling and is accordingly pretty good here. Bafflingly, his moves contain a Dropkick - not very Hoganesque. Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Clothesline = P (2) High Knee = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: Piledriver = P (3) Back Suplex = K (3) <= *R Irish Whip = K Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) Dropkick = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) LEG DROP = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Dropkick = P/K (1) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Leg Drop = P/K (3) THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR "You will feel the power of the Ultimate Warrior as I fight you in the squared circle... etc." A complete power wrestler; benefits from lots of bouncing into the ropes and clotheslining. Press Slam 'em out of the ring and follow it with the Running Splash for lotsa damage. Yeah! Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Clothesline = P (2) Shoulder Tackle = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: GORILLA PRESS = P (3) Atomic Drop = K (3) <= *R Irish Whip = K Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) Dropkick = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) Knee Drop = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Dropkick = P/K (1) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Knee Drop = P/K (3) THE HONKY TONK MAN "Elvis who?" The dullard of the south wiggles his way somehow into this license. I don't care if he WAS the longest reiging IC Champ! Beware of the Jump Kick which always manages to leap you into the ropes. (Why couldn't he have a clothesline - the punches are irritating.) Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Running Punches = P (2) Jump Kick = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: Noogie = P (3) <= *U SHAKE RATTLE & ROLL = K (3) Irish Whip = K <= *R Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) Jump Kick = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) Elbow Drop = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Fist Drop = P/K (Can't connect) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Fist Drop = P/K (3) "HACKSAW" JIM DUGGAN "Hooooooooooooooooo!" Apart from the clothesline and the Body Slam, Technos have vastly overrated Duggan's ability in the ring. And where's the 3 Point Rush? The Bulldog always hits the ropes - be cautious. Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Clothesline = P (2) High Knee = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: Bulldog = P (3) <= *U Back Suplex = K (3) <= *R Irish Whip = K Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) Drop Kick = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) Elbow Drop = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Dropkick = P/K (1) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Elbow Drop = P/K (3) THE BIG BOSS MAN "Yo' gonna serve hard time, punk!" Probably the best of the game, staying firmly on the floor and works 'em over thoroughly. Pound them into the floor with the unreversable Headbutt or knee them off the ropes. Stationary Punch = P (1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K (1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K Whilst Running Back Fist = P (2) Shoulder Tackle = K (2) In Grapple Body Slam = U+P (1) Headlock = P From Headlock: Gut Wrench Suplex = P (3) Headbutt = K (3) <= *U Irish Whip = K <= *R Against Running Back Body Drop = P (1) BIG BOSS SLAM = P (3,Once their energy has reached 5(But this rule does not apply to the CPU ;P )) Knee Smash = K (1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P (By Head) Stomp = P (By body,1 after 2 stomps) Elbow Drop = K (By head,2) Pin = K (By body) Big Splash = P+K (3) >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Elbow Drop = P/K (You can't hit with it! D'oh!) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Elbow Drop = P/K (3) * SECTION 3 - Andre the Giant & Ted DiBiase * Gene Okerlund: "They are declaring themselves challengers to your World Championship belts!" Andre: "No-one can beat Mega Bucks." Ted DiBiase: "I'll put you to sleep with my Million Dollar Dream!" Despite the fact that the feud was a boring washout, the game was being made at the right time and turned Andre and Ted into demigods accordingly, so that they struck fear into gamers' hearts everywhere. Those moves to beware of: "THE MILLION DOLLAR MAN" TED DiBIASE Stationary Punch (1 after 3 Punches) Kick (1 after 2 Kicks) Run MILLION DOLLAR DREAM (Up to 6 until you submit) Back Away Taunt (Gains him some breathing space) Whilst Running Clothesline (1) Sliding Knee (2) In Grapple Body Slam (1) Headlock From Headlock: Backbreaker (3) Back Suplex (3) <= *R Suplex (3) MILLION DOLLAR DREAM (Up to 6 until you submit) Irish Whip Irish Whip Against Running Back Body Drop (2) Bizarre Pseudo Back Body Drop (2) Powerslam (3) Dropkick (2) Ground Attacks Pick Up Stomp (1 after 2 stomps) Fist Drop (1) Elbow Drop (1) Pin >From Turnbuckle Against Standing Unknown, but probably Dropkick (1) >From Turnbuckle Against Prone Elbow Smash (3) ANDRE THE GIANT Stationary Punch (1 after 2 Punches, 2 on the 3rd) Kick (1) Run Whilst Running Shoulder Tackle (2) In Grapple Headlock From Headlock: Boot Lace Rake AKA Coconut Crush (3) Canadian Back Breaker (Up to 6 until you submit) Irish Whip Irish Whip <= *R Against Running Chop (1) Big Kick (1) Ground Attacks Stomp (1) Pick Up Sit-Down Squash (2) Pin >From Turnbuckle Against Standing I DOUBT IT! >From Turnbuckle Against Prone I DOUBT IT - at least, I hope NOT... Grapple moves that can be performed on Andre with little or no chance of failure: HTM's Noogie Bossman's Headbutt Anyone's Body Slam (with a little button-bashing) Warrior's Press Slam (As above) Definite No-nos: Toe-to-toe brawling (CHOP! SMACK!) HTM's Shake, Rattle & Roll (Irish Whip) Running (or against Running) Kick button moves (only stun him) Bossman's Bossman Slam (Headlock) Tactics: Treat DiBiase as a normal wrestler and you'll be alright, but pump in the silver when he slaps the Dream on ya (ditto for Andre's Canadian Back Breaker). Fling Andre to the ropes and Body Drop him, pick him up, do it again. This method may be boring, but it'll win. Beware when doing this with Boss Man - when Andre starts getting knackered, Boss Man will try to Slam him and probably fail, giving Andre all the opening he needs. Don't toe-to-toe it with him - he'll chop you down to size. * SECTION 4 - Out of the Ring * Outside of the ring your repertoire is limited to the Body Slam and the Whip, P and K respectively. The Chair Smack or Table Bash will cause 2 damage. Another fun trick is to toss 'em over the ropes with a Body Slam, Back Body Drop or GORILLA PRESS, then run at the ropes. Before you bounce off press a button - this will send your wrestler flying to greet them! This works on both standing and prone opponents, but is obviously easier on guys on their backs, and causes 2 damage. Two players can also land this move simultaneously (!). Another thing is if you are a player awaiting your tag, pressing a button will fling your hands out. If an opponent wanders into your arms, you restrain him for a few seconds. Your mate can then pound him with punches and kicks. This means beware of the opponent's side of the ring. * SECTION 5 - Cheats * Okay so this isn't a cheat, just a hilarious bug. Over to mattb@bite.net: "At a point in the match when both your opponents are in the ring, throw the "legal" man to the outside. Then, take the "illegal" man and knock him down as quickly as possible and cover him. Yes, that's right, cover the illegal man. If you cover him before the legal man gets up on the outside, then you have performed the trick. The illegal man will not kick out and the legal man on the outside will not get up. The ref will simply count to twenty and you will win by count-out. Note: this will not work if you cover the illegal man after the legal man gets up. He has to be lying on the outside." * SECTION 6 - Revision History * v3.0 = Action Replay Cheats - Andre & DiBiase selectable! v2.0 = Unreversables and the "illegal man" cheat. v1.0 = The Nuts & Bolts of the game. Little frills. * SECTION 7 - The Ending * Part One: When you complete "WWF live from New York" (three matches plus DiBiase and Andre), you are treated to a a newspaper headline (Oooh! How different from every other WWF game!) of WRESTLING (good name) dated April 1 1989. "Hail to the new champions. 'This is a nightmare' says DiBiase". Then old Moose-face Elizabeth comes on and rasps "I'm pleased to present you with this championship belt," surrounded by lovely flowers and a congratulations message. Then you move on to "WWF live from Tokyo." Part Two: After three matches and title match (in which the second match will feature DiBiase), Liz flaunts her 'talents', then you are treated to a rather splendidly accurate picture of the Megapowers, Hacksaw and Warrior, with the accompanying text: ENTRANTS Hulk Hogan Randy "Macho Man" Savage The Ultimate Warrior Hacksaw Jim Duggan then the pictures change to Andre/DiBiase and HTM/Boss Man. ENTRANTS Andre the Giant "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase The Honky Tonk Man The Big Boss Man THEN back to Megapowers/Hacksaw+Warrior, with Great matches! You've beaten the best of the best. Now, you too can be called a superstar. then the other wrestlers' picture get THE END. * SECTION 8 - The Incidentals * There are some great touches to this game that are just sooooo wonderful and lacking in other wrestling games. OK so it lacks moves, and finishers are all too available, but I'm still playing it ten years later. Here are some miscellany; things I love and/or observations: * Boss Man's wiggly eyebrow when he walks. * The slight change of costume for some wrestlers each match. Note however, that DiBiase & Duggan are the same sprite, with appropriate colouring. * The great portraits of each wrestler in the board above the ring - best viewed by leaping from the turnbuckle. * The way the crowd stop and gasp when someone hits the floor. * Note when Andre and Ted roll into the ring - those lazy guys couldn't be bothered to draw a new scene so they reversed it. Hence above the curtain is a reversed WWF logo - it looks weird. * That crazy little ref. I'm sure he's a sort of Dave Hebner, but he goes mental when there's a submission move or he tries to count you back in! * Hacksaw's lovely little gut punch. * DiBiase's range of taunts. * On the last frame of Warrior receiving a Shake Rattle & Roll, look at his wrist - they forgot to draw on his wrist band. * SECTION 9 - Action Replay Cheats * Note that you are only able to do these if you possess Raine, the WWF Superstars rom and legally own it... >;) Enter Raine, load Superstars and select: Game Setup Action Replay New a box should appear with the following fields: Name: Addr: Data: Info: Name & Info are irrelevant to the Computer, so put anything helpful to you. 'Name' is what the cheat will be called in the list, so name it well! Edit the fields with the addr(ess) and data given from the list. Enjoy! Character Select (P1): Address : 001c0071 Data : xx where 'xx' is one of the following: 00 Randy Savage 01 Hulk Hogan 02 Ultimate Warrior 03 Honky Tonk Man 04 Hacksaw Jim Duggan 05 Big Boss Man 06 Ted DiBiase* 07 Andre the Giant* Character Select (P2): Address : 001c006f Data : xx where xx is as above. NB. If this cheat is on its own then BOTH P1 & P2 will be the character entered. Use with P1 cheat to rectify. *Andre & DiBiase - At last! They are selectable... at a small cost. Here are their move lists: "THE MILLION DOLLAR MAN" TED DiBIASE Stationary Punch = P(1 after 3 Punches) Kick = K(1 after 2 Kicks) Run = P+K MILLION DOLLAR DREAM (Up to 6 until you submit) Back Away Taunt (Gains him some breathing space) Whilst Running Clothesline = P(1) Sliding Knee = K(2) In Grapple Belly-to-Belly Suplex = U+P(1) Headlock = P From Headlock: MILLION DOLLAR DREAM = P/K(Up to 6 until you submit) Irish Whip = K Against Running Bizarre Pseudo Back Body Drop = P(2) Powerslam = K(3) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P(By head) Fist Drop = P(By Body, when weaker,1) Elbow Drop = P(By Body,1) Pin = K ANDRE THE GIANT Stationary Punch = P(1 after 2 Punches, 2 on the 3rd) Kick = K(1) Chug = P+K Whilst Running Shoulder Tackle = P/K(2) In Grapple Overhead Toss = U+P Headlock = P From Headlock: Canadian Back Breaker = P/K(Up to 6 until you submit) Irish Whip = K<= *R Against Running Chop = P(1) Big Kick = K(1) Ground Attacks Pick Up = P(By head) Sit-Down Squash = P(By body,2) Pin = K >From Turnbuckle Against Standing None >From Turnbuckle Against Prone None - Andre can climb the turnbuckle but is unable to do anything once he's there! Andre has a slight flaw - if HE personally pins someone or makes them submit, then the CPU assumes you have lost to the Megabucks. Ring Outs are fine, as is any other partner for him. It is only when he gets the win himself. *** 1999 Copyright black2@orinoco.demon.co.uk Please do NOT reproduce without my permission - you know it makes sense.
