Manual “Drascula” NECESSARY EQUIPMENT MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS Processor: 486 DX at 33 MHz Memory: 4 MB Graphic card: VGA Mouse CD-ROM unit Operative System: MS-DOS 3.0 or superior Sound card: Sound Blaster, Gravis Ultrasound or compatibles Free space on hard disk: 30 MB File CONFIG.SYS with the parameter FILES = 25 or more. RECOMMENDED Processor: 486 DX 2 at 66 MHz Memory: 8 MB Free space on hard disk: 60 MB How can I check if these requirements are fulfilled? All these requirements are comparable to the actual standards, so that your computer should fulfill them. In any case there is always the possibility to look up information in the computer manuals or to execute an information program like the utilities Norton, PC Tools or Microsoft Diagnostics. Moreover you can follow the next indications without using any of the above mentioned utilities: Conventional Memory: Execute the command MEM from MS DOS. There will appear some lines, which indicate the quantity of free conventional memory. Free Space on hard disk: Execute DIR from the unit where you want to install DRASCULA and it will appear the free space of the unit. Another possibility consists in executing the command CHKDSK that also informs about the free space. Sound Card: To enjoy the various sound effects, voices and music of the game, you need a Sound Blaster, Gravis Ultrasound or a 100% compatible card. If you don’t know which card you have, please look it up in the manuals or call the technical service of the store where the card was purchased. Version of the operative system: Execute the command VER from MS DOS and it will appear the corresponding version of the operative system. File CONFIG.SYS: In this configuration file there is normally installed the parameter FILES since it is used for a large number of programs, which require a high number of opened files, e.g. 25. To check the configuration of the parameter FILES use a text editor like EDIT from MS DOS. To modify this parameter, place the cursor in the corresponding line of FILES and substitute the number by 25. It has to indicate: FILES=25 Once realized the change, you only have to save the file, exit from MS DOS and reinitiate the computer. INSTALLATION AND REMOVE INSTALLATION To install the game, insert the CD in the CD-ROM unit and then type: X: {enter} (x is the letter corresponding to the CD-ROM unit, normally D or E) Now type: Install {enter} It will now appear the installation program and if you follow the instructions attentively the game will be installed correctly on the hard disk. REMOVE Removing the program from the hard disk is very simple. If you have the MS-DOS version 6.0 or superior, you only have to type: DELTREE C:\DRASCULA (C: is the letter that corresponds to the chosen unit and DRASCULA is the directory where you have installed the game). 3. HOW TO CONFIGURE THE MEMORY There are different kinds of enlarging the conventional memory, which mainly depends on the operative system. Here are some proposals how to obtain more memory: If you have MS-DOS 6.0 or superior: Type MEMMAKER {enter}. Then choose FAST INSTALLATION. After it, you will be asked whether you want to use the expanded memory. Choose NO. The computer will reinitiate various times to adapt itself to the new configuration. If you have MS-DOS inferior to 6.0: You will have to create a “self-starter” diskette. Insert a diskette and type the following command: SYS A: {enter} Now, you will have to write the following lines pressing {enter} after each line: COPY WITH A:\CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH BUFFERS=25 FILES=25 If you desire, include also the information about your sound card and your mouse device by following the instructions of the device manufacturers. Moreover you should add the controller of the CD-ROM unit. To save this configuration press at the same time {control} and {z} and then press {enter}. Now, you have to copy the file HIMEM.SYS to the self-starter diskette: COPY C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS A:\ The same happens with the CD-ROM controllers (indispensable for the performance of Drascula), with the mouse and with the sound card. You also should create the file AUTOEXEC.BAT, in which should be included the command MSCDEX.EXE that is supplied by the CD-ROM manufacturer together with the parameters indicated in the manual of the CD-ROM unit. Moreover include the mouse driver, e.g. MOUSE.COM. This file will be created by the same way, which is indicated above. Once saved the 2 files, reinitiate the computer with the self-starter diskette. If the operative system has at its disposal any memory manager: If the memory of the computer is managed by any program like QEMM, MEMORY MAX or any similar program, then there shouldn’t be any problem with the execution of the game. If you, in spite of it, detect a problem, create a starter diskette according to the above given explanation. 4. HOW TO CONFIGURE THE PROGRAM? The installation program permits to select the unit and the directory of the program. If you don’t choose a certain directory, it will be created automatically. Once having installed the game, there will appear a menu from which you will be able to configure the sound card and the volume. 5. HOW TO PLAY THE GAME? In order to execute the game, you have to enter in the directory of DRASCULA: CD \DRASCULA {enter} Type now DRASCULA and press {enter}. (Don’t forget to execute before the file SETUP.EXE, if it’s the first time that you play the game or if you want to change the sound card). POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Typing INSTALL {enter} and the installation program doesn’t appear. It is possible that the program isn’t executing from the CD-ROM unit. The CD-ROM unit is not installed correctly. Consult the manual or the distributor of the CD-ROM unit. If it’s none of these problems and the installation program still isn’t executing, please call our Technical Service since the CD-ROM possibly is defective. The computer indicates that there is not sufficient memory to play. Read the section HOW TO CONFIGURE THE MEMORY in order to adapt the memory to the game requirements. The computer blocks up. A program (or virus) has modified some of the essential files. Please install the game again. The game indicates a “strange” error. Please consult our Technical Service since the game possibly is broken. THE GAME ITSELF In DRASCULA you play the role of John Hacker, a British estate agent, who travels to a small village of Transylvania in order to negotiate the sale of some ground of Gibraltar with the Count Drascula. But unfortunately Hacker is not aware of who is Drascula in reality: the most terrible vampire with just one idea on his mind: DOMINATING the World demonstrating that he is even more evil than his brother Vlad. CONTROL To control the actions and movements of Hacker you have 3 options at your disposal: The first consists in moving the cursor to the superior part of the screen until there will be indicated the possible actions you can choose. You only have to click on one action you want Hacker to realize. The second consists in pressing the right button of the mouse. There will be shown a series of panels or squares in which are - in the superior line - the icons of actions and - in the inferior line - the icons of objects of the inventory. You only have to click on one icon of action you like to realize or on one icon of object you like to use. If you want to realize an action with an object, click first on the icon of action and then on the object. The third option is using the F1-F8 keys. Each key represents one action: F1: Look: to find out, what is each object. F2: Take: to take something. F3: Open: to open doors and windows. F4: Close: to close opened objects. F5: Talk: to talk to different persons. F6: Move: to move objects. F8: Go To: to move yourself. F9: Pressing F9, you will activate the panel of sound control. Here you can increase or decrease the volume of the master, the voices and the music. To go back to the game, you only have to press the right button of the mouse. F10: Save / Load: Pressing F10, a screen with a castle in the background will appear. To save a game, you will have to click on the square and then on the button “SAVE”. If you want to load a game, click on the name of the game you like to load and then on “LOAD”. After having realized one of these two options, you only have to click on “PLAY” to keep on playing the game. T: If you press the T-key, then the texts of the dialogues will appear. V: If you press the V-key, you only will hear the voices of the persons without the texts of the dialogues. SUPR: If you press the SUPR-key, then the computer will reinitiate. ESC: If you press the ESC-key during any animation, this animation will be “removed”. If you press it during the game, then you will be asked if you want to exit the game. IMPORTANT: If you press any key while a character is speaking, the sentence will be interrupted.
